Basin, from 1900 to 1908 , a town, called Coal Basin , was
• established near the present No . 5 mine portal and consisted
of 250 homes as well as a store , school and post office .
From 1903 to 1908 (the year the mine closed) ,
the difficulties of operating during the winter proved so
great that the mining camp was regularly abandoned from fall
to spring .
It is apparent that the lengthy winter and
short growing season of Coal Basin make it a far less attractive
residential area than the nearby towns of Redstone , Carbondale
and Glenwood Springs , all of which have lower elevations and
milder climates .
In addition, a Coal Basin resident would have
• to commute to Carbondale, some 23 miles away , to attend
school or shop for groceries . Mid-Continent employees are
furnished free bus service from Carbondale and Glenwood
Springs to work at Coal Basin. However , the frequent trips
which would be necessary for individual families living in
Coal Basin would likely prove to be an unattractive expense .
3 . Information on previous mining in the mine plan
area .
A portion of the permit area was previously
mined. From 1900 to 1909 , the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co .
extracted 1 , 009 , 100 tons of coal through a tunnel which Mid-
Continent presently uses in conjunction with its No . 5 mine
operations . (Table III-A-9) .
27
