The area is characterized by rocky, well drained sandy soils with rocky
bluffs and arid vegetation. The Chandler Creek stream bed is dry
except for extreme rainfall events which are very infrequent. The area
is not productive as noted in the soil district report (Exhibit F).
Upon completion of mining related activities, Northfield intends to
return all surface disturbances to the prevailing land use of rangeland.
2.04.4 Cultural and Historic Resources Information
The Colorado Historical Society was contacted on October 21, 2005
regarding fragile or historic lands in the area. The database search
report dated January 30, 2006 indicates three sites and one survey
were located within the vicinity of the permit boundary. The railroad
grade and mine workings in Section 13, Chandler Mine air shaft in
Section 15, ~~nd prehistoric sites were identified in 1977 by the
Department of the Army while surveying a reservoir site within a seven
mile radius near Florence, Colorado. A 2002 mapping attempt was
unsuccessful due, to insufficient information (Exhibit E).
Metcalfe Arcl~aeological Consultants performed a cultural survey of the
proposed suiface facility area and bluff faces that may be impacted by
minor subsidlence. No significant cultural sightings were reported
(Exhibit AF).
In the event that any additional cultural or historic resources are
identified wii:hin the mine area, Northfield will contact Colorado State
Historical Society.
2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
This permit application provides detailed information on the hydrologic
and geologic: environment and resources potentially impacted by the
Northfield oi~eration within the "general area," "permit area" and
"adjacent area" as described in Section 1.04 of The Rule.
The General Area includes Chandler Creek, Fawn Hollow and Spring
Creek drain~~ges and watersheds with confluences at the Arkansas
River in Frernont County. The General Area represents areas that
have the pol:ential to be impacted by mining activities and include the
Permit Area.
The Permit l~rea will include the mining operation, processing and
loading faciliities. The actual surface area of disturbance will be
approximatE~ly 20 acres, composed of mine portal, coal processing,
coal stockpiles, waste stockpiles, truck loading area, small
office/employee building and sediment ponds.
2.04-4 Revised 5/01/07
