Specific previously mined coal within the permit area include the west
'/4 of Section 14, the northwest '/a. of Section 23 and the northeast '/a
of Section 22 which was the site of the underground Chandler Coal
Mine. The southwest'/a of Section 11 and northwest'/a of Section 14
was the site of the Brookside, Prospect and Canon City coal mines.
The current land use according to Fremont County Department of
Planning and Zoning is Agricultural Forestry in Sections 11, 12, 13
and 14 (Exhibit D). Adjacent land in Sections 12 and 13 are
Agricultural Living (Exhibit D).
Sections 23, 24 and the south'/2 of the southwest'/a of Section 13 are
within the town of Williamsburg city limits. All land use within
• Williamsburg city limits is one family residential structure per site.
Alternative uses must be presented to the Town Board.
Brookside city limits extend into Section 11, the very northern portion
of the permit area. Land use in this area is Steep Terrain-Slide Area
Overlay and Estate Residential Zone District (Exhibit U). The region is
characterized by 30% slope grades or greater and designated not safe
for development. The area with gentler than 30% slopes may be
developed as very low density single-family residences with large lots
that can possibly accommodate livestock.
Within the general area, land has been utilized as undeveloped
rangeland or temporarily converts to mining uses. Some agricultural
pasture exists to the east of the permit area but is limited by the
availability of water. There have been no significant land use changes
in the area within the past five years.
Surface Facility Site Description
The proposed Northfield surface facility will impact approximately 20
acres and will be located in Section 13, north of County Road 79. The
surface operation will consist of a mine portal, processing equipment,
haul roads, stockpiles and administrative offices. The hydrologic
monitoring hole NF-02 is located at the northern most end of the
proposed site.
