the northe~~st with the Arkansas River receiving all surface water
flows. Sm<~II ephemeral and intermittent drainages parallel the
slopes. Soil materials are generally poorly developed sandy loams
derived from surficial colluvial/alluvial materials (Exhibit I). The mine
site lies wii:hin an arid vegetation region including many species of
cacti and native arid grasses (Exhibit 7).
Environmental resources are minimal due to the aril climate,
approximai:ely 13 inches of rainfall per year, and lack of water
resources. Adjacent land in Sections 12 and 13 contain gravel mining
operations. The land is not capable of supporting agriculture due to
sandy loarri soil and minimal water.
Two historic mining areas lie within the permit area, the Chandler
Mine in the southwest corner and the Brookside, Prospect and Canon
City coal mines in southern portions of Sections 10 and 11 to the
northeast shown on Map 4, Extent of Abandoned Mine Workings. The
aforementi~~ned mines were underground mining operations with
surface operations located outside the proposed Northfield permit
area. Minimal reclamation was performed at these sites. The mining
method for all historic mines in the area was room and pillar.
• Coal Mines Located within the Northfield Area (Exhibit H~,
~V~ ~~
~~~
~\
[7
OCEAN W/~-VE SEAM
Mine Name Sec T R Dates Tons Produced
Blue Flame 12/19/70 1939-1942 2 098
Canon Ci 11/19/70 1934-1951 39 786
Golden Quality
#2 12,13/19/70 1947-1952 9,602
Golden Quality
#3 12,13/19/70 1952-1956 14,581
Griffiths 18 19 30/19/70 1922-1955 403 944
BROOKSIDE SEA M
Boulder Canon 11/19/70 1934-1937 3 048
Brookside 10,11,14,
15/19/70 1893-1960 2,075,125
CANON SEAM
Fremont 24 25/19/70 1883-1942 2 788 353
Rockvale #2 24/19/70 1899-1934 4 696 166
CHANDLEF~ SEAM
Chandler 14-27/19/70 1890-1942 5 149 996
ROCKVALE° SEAM
Rockvale #:i 24 25 19 70 1883-1893 2 053 948
2.04-2
