before the next layer is started. CONTRACTOR shall coordinate with COMPANY'S
REPRESENTATIVE on compactions test scheduling.
G. Moisture Content and Density
1. The following table gives the moisture and density requirements for the various
embankment materials requiring compaction.
Allowable Moisture Minimum Percent
Material Content Compaction'
Range From Optimum
Upstream Clay Blanket 0% to +3% 98%
Downstream Earth -2% to +3% 95%
Buthress General Fill
Downstream Drainage -2% to +3% RD = 60%2
Blanket
Trench Drain Filter -2% to +3% Compact with backhoe
Material bucket (minimum 4 tamps)
Interceptor Trench Filter -2% to +3% Compact with backhoe
Material bucket (minimum 4 tamps)
Clay Cap 0% to +3% 98%
' As determined by ASTM D-698 testing procedures (Standard Proctor).
2 RD =relative density; provide for relative density of 60 percent as determined by
ASTM D-4253, Dry Method, and ASTM D-4254, Method A.
H. Compaction of the embankment and foundation shall be with equipment designed for
the type of material being placed. In the event that the initial density tests on the
compacted material show that satisfactory results are not being achieved,
CONTRACTOR shall change his procedures to the extent necessary to achieve the
specified moisture content and density. The options available to CONTRACTOR in
making such changes in the procedure include one or a combination of the following:
1. Increase number of passes by the compaction equipment of each lift.
2. Decrease the thickness of the lift to be compacted.
3. Adjust soil moisture content prior to compaction by sprinkling and mixing water
' if the soil is drier than the specified allowable moisture content range, or
aerating and drying if the soil is wetter than the specified allowable moisture
content range.
' 4. Select soil at the material source that will have a moisture content closer to the
optimum moisture content.
' 02300-10
