Kvaerner Metals Project No. 306900
General Specification No. GC-18
Geosynthetic Lining
favorable for performing such works, and within the warranty limits imposed by the
t material manufacturer.
All field joints, supply and installation of boots, tying and sealing the liner to pipework
' penetrating the liner, and providing all equipment necessary to complete the work are the
responsibility of the Contractor. Installation of all HDPE materials shall be in accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions, and approval of the same by the Engineer.
' Handling and storage of liner material shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's
printed instructions.
' The subgrade surface, on which the HDPE will be placed, shall be compacted smooth to
the required density and shall be free of rocks and sharp particles. All such particles
shall be removed by raking, brooming, or hand picking as necessary just prior to the
placement of the liner. The surface shall be inspected and approved by the Engineer.
' Horizontal field seams on slopes shall be kept to a minimum. Seams shall be made by
lapping the uphill panels over the downhill panels.
' The HDPE panels shall be placed over the prepared subgrade one at a time and shall be
seamed to the adjacent panels immediately after placement. Adequate temporary
anchoring of the panel shall be provided to protect the material from damage due to the
' wind. Geotextile fabric may be required under the membrane panels in rough areas,
when requested by the Engineer. All personnel working or walking on the deployed
panels shall.wear soft-sole shoes.
1 The HDPE shall be installeds;n a relaxed condition and shall be free of tension or stress
upon completion of the work. Stretching of the material to fit, will not be allowed.
' Plastic sand bags shall be used, as required, to hold the liner panels in position during
installation. Bags shall be sufficiently close knit to keep the fines from working through
t the bottom, sides or seams of the bags. Each bag shall contain adequate quantity of
sand and shall be tied closed after filling. Sand bags, if used to ballast the liner, shall be
removed after the joints are fused together and the permanent anchorages are complete.
Continuous loading is required along leading edges of panels, in case of high wind.
1 Anchor trenches shall be excavated by the Contractor to the lines and grade shown on
the drawings. Slightly rounded edges shall be provided, where HDPE adjoins the trench,
to avoid sharp bends in the material.
Anchor trenches shall be backfilled and compacted as directed by the Engineer. Care
' shall be exercised in backfilling the trenches as to prevent any damage to the liner.
Panel placement shall not proceed at an ambient temperature below 40°F (5°C), or
' above 104°F (40°C) as measured at HDPE surface: Deployrent shall not be done
during any precipitation, in the presence of excessive moisture, in an area of ponded
water, or in the times of excessive winds.
' J.UOG9\WPI9PEC\$TRUCTGC195PC DDC. ftev ~C~ 8 Pr~ntea June ], 1999
