1 Kvaerner Metals Project No. sossoo
General Specification No. GC-18
' Geosynthetic Lining
Seaming of joints shall be done by extrusion process, using the manufacturers
recommended procedures and equipment. The surfaces of joint shall be cleaned of
moisture, dust, dirt, debris and oxidation, not more than one hour prior to welding.
' Geonet shall be deployed over the lower layer of HDPE on the bottom of the basin and
on the slopes. It shall be placed in relaxed condition with no overlapping of panels.
Geonet does not need to extend into anchor trenches.
5.0 WORKMANSHIP
Prior to commencing the work, Contractor shall certify, in writing, that the surface on
which the HDPE will be installed is acceptable. Thereafter, it shall be the Contractor's
' responsibility to maintain the prepared soil surface. Any damage to the subgrade
caused by this installation shall be repaired at Contractor's expense. The soil surface
shall be observed daily by the Contractor to evaluate the surface condition. Changes in
' the supporting soil surface caused by natural conditions shall be reported to the
Engineer.
' HDPE sheets shall not be placed on subgrade soil which has become softened by water.
The Contractor shall provide for dewatering and for drying of the subgrade as required
during installation of the liner.
t All joints shall be tightly bonded and shall have at least the strength of the base material.
Any liner area showing damage due to penetration by foreign objects or distress from
' rough subgrade shall be replaced or covered and sealed, with an additional layer of
material, as directed by the Engineer. Any portion of liner damaged before or during
installation shall be removed or repaired at Contractors expense.
' Personnel working on the HDPE shall not smoke, or wear damaging shoes, as
determined by the Engineer, nor engage in other activities which could damage the liner.
Heavy foot-traffic contact with the HDPE liner shall be minimized.
t The Engineer shall have the authority to order an immediate stoppage of the work due to
inclement weather, the use of improper installation procedures, or for any reason which,
in his sale opinion, may result in a defective liner.
Installation shall be performed under the direction of a field engineer who has installed a
minimum of 2,500,000 square feet of flexible lining material. The field engineer shall be
provided by the Contractor, and shall be in absolute charge of the liner installation.
The welding equipment used shall be capable of continuously monitoring and controlling
the temperatures in the zone of contact where the machine is actually fusing the lining
material, to ensure changes in weather conditions will not affect the integrity of the weld.
No "fish mouths" shall be allowed within the seam area. Where"fish mouths" occur, the
material shall be cut, overlapped and an overlap extrusion weld shall be applied. All
' welds on completion of the work shall be tightly bonded.
' J11069'~WP~SPECISTRUCTGC185PG.000. Rav ~O~ 9 PnntsE JUna 3. 1999
