Sotl Pit - Spotl Fertility - Spoil Quality
• Soil Eerti licy and spoil quality samples are collected periodically from shallow postmine
soil pits which are randomly located using a 500 foot grid. The postmine soil pits are also
used [o evaluate plan[ rooting characteristics and to compare soil/spoil profile data with
site specific ievegecacion data.
postmine soil pits are placed within reclamation blocks that have been soiled and seedetl
for a minimum of three years. Similar minimum time frames are used for monitoring postmine
veyetation. The permanent vegetation has generally established sufficiently after three to
four years to evaluate tote ra cci ons between rooting characteristics and soil/spoil quality
(Schafer et. al., 19991.
Historical soil antl spoil quality data Eor the 1983 through 1988 reclamation blocks are
presented and discussed in previous Topsoil and Spoil Monitoring reports (PCC, 1987 and
1989) and [he Annual Reclamation Reports (PCC, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1999) that have been
s ubmi[ted [o the Division. Soil and spoil monitoring was completed tlu ri ng 1999 and is
presented in Soils Tab section of this report. Additional soil/spoil fertility samples are
planned for the 2000 field season.
• Spoil Sampling in [he Lenn oo-: Hiqhwall Reduction Area
SCC is required [o sample final graded spoil from the Lennox highwall reduction area on a
300 Eoot grid and test fer sodium. Es posed sotlic strata with an unsuitable SAR level will
eichec be buried in [he final pit or cov_red with two [o three feet of suitable spoil prior
to soil replacement. No final grading was inttiated in the Lennon ht ghwall reduc non area
during [he 1995 field season, hence no Lennox spoil samples are presented here.
Wolf Creek Spoil
SCC is required to sample and analyze final gratled spoil from [he Wolf Creek mining area
prior to soil replacement Spoil is sampled on a 300 foot ho[i zontal grid and tested fo[
pH, acid base porenrial IABP1, and sail salinity (EC1. Suitable spotl [opdressing Isubsoill
is replaced prior to soil redistribution where acid strata (pH ~5 and ABP o-5) are
encountered. The monito rl nq pr oyram is outlined on Payes 6-153, 6-153a, 6-164, and 9-40 of
Tabs 6 and 9, Volumes 3 and 7, Per miC C-80-005. Ne final gradetl spoil samples were taY.en
in 1999.
