.~;
RULE 2. 1 THE SPECIES OF VEGETATION PLANTED, THE LOCATIONS AND
APPROXIMATE DATES OF PLANTING.
No planting occurred at this operation in the last year. No land
was ready for planting by the time the planting season had been reached.
Planting of those areas which were ready shortly after the planting
season will be planted next October or November.
RULE 2. 1 THE TYPE AND APPROXIMATE QUANTITY OF FERTILIZERS, ORGANIC
MATERIAL, OR SOIL CONDITIONERS USED AND LOCATION OF USE.
No fertilizers or soil amendments were used in association with the
previous plantings at this quarry.
RULE 2. 1 6 AN APPRAISAL OF THE SIICCESS OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS, AND
IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OF ANY EFFORTS, A SHORT NARRATIVE ON THE
SUSPECTED OR DETERMINED CAUSE OF SUCH FAILIIRE.
The old Peter Kiewit Stockpile area and the Tract WDT area have
shown that success with the seed mixtures we have used and will continue
using is quite good where soil is limited or absent and limestone waste
not present. A similar mixture was used on the access road sides with
similar success, even though the slope is very steep. But in the latter
case, the north aspect certainly has contributed to the success.
The shop slope has shown that sweetclover is important to
establishing a quick cover and helping the grasses to become
established. It also shows that slope stabilization is critical to the
success of any reclamation project. The instability which has developed
in the eastern quarter of this slope has been a severe aggravation and
appears to be alleviated through the construction of a support berm at
the base of the slope. The completion of the support berm will further
alleviate this problem allowing a regrading of the slope and replanting
of the area where the slumping damaged the slope.
The limestone waste pile has shown fair to good growth over most of
the face, even though the elope is close to the angle of repose. In a
few areas, the soil sloughed off the slope and this will need to be
treated somewhat differently in the future. However, it is apparent
that at least a temporary revegetation of fair to good cover can be
established on this steep slope, especially where the aspect is north to
northeasterly.
All in all, nearly all of the revegetation projects to date have
met with at least fair success, and most with an outstanding success.
All of the areas reclaimed to date, however, have been associated with
disturbances which do not include the quarry face itself. That will be
quite a different situation which will need to be approached in the
future.
Page 3 of Q 1989 PIREVIEW QUARRY ANNUAL REPORT
