Soil Pit-Soil Fertilitv -SOOiI guality. Soil fertility end spoil quality samples are
•
collected peri odiceLly tram shallow postmine soil pits which are placed near representative
revegetation monitoring sites. The postmine soil pits are also used to evaluate plant
rooting characteristics end to compare soil/spoil profile data with site specific
revegetation data.
Postmine soil pits ere placed within reclamation blocks [hat have been soiled and seeded
for a minimum of three years. Similar minimum time frames are used for monitoring postmine
vegetation. The permanent vegetation has generally established sufficiently after three to
four years to evaluate int erections between rooting characteristics and soil/spoil quality
(Schafer et. el., 1979).
No soil or spoil samples were Collected near revegetation sampling points during the 1993
field season. Historical soil end spoil quality date for the 1983 through 1988 reclamation
blocks are presented end discussed in previous Topsoil end Spoil Monitoring reports or
Annual Reclamation reports that have been submitted to CDMG (PCC, 1987, 1989 and 1992).
Representative revegetation sites from reclamation years 1989, 1990, and 1991 are scheduled
to be sampled during the 1994 field season.
Sooil Samolinc in the Lennox Hi ah wall Reduction Aree. Peabody is required to sample final
graded spoil from the Lennon highwall reduction area (in the immediate vicinity of Drill
Mole Site 2614E) on a 300 foot grid and test for sodium. Exposed sodic strata will either
be buried in the final pit or covered with two to three fee[ of suitable spoil prior to
soil replacement. No final grading was completed in the Lennox highwall reduction area
during the 1993 field season. Therefore, no spoil samples were collected to determine
sodium levels.
According to Exhibit 13-2, Reclamation Plan (dated 01/26/93), the remaining 2,000 feet of
Lennox highwall in the vicinity of Drill Hole Site 2614E, will be reduced end reclaimed in
1998. Spoil samples will be collected from this area once final grading has been
completed.
Wolf Creek Spoil. Peabody is required to sample end analyze final graded spoil from the
Wolf Creek mining area prior to soil repl et ement. Spoil is sampled on a 300 foot
• horizontal grid end tested for pH, acid base potential (ABP), end soil salinity (EC). A
selectively handling suitable spoil topdressing (subsoil) is made prior to soil replacement
2
