1993 ANNUAL RECLAMATION REPORT
1993 Disturbance Area
The 1993 Annual Rec Lamation Report, Exhibit 93.1, shows the limits of disturbance as of
January 1, 1994. This line generally depicts areas of soil removal ahead of mining.
Actual disturbance ahead of mining for 1993 was 0.9 acres in the lower Wolf Creek mining
area and 0.0 acres in the Wadge mining area.
Backfifling and Grading
The 1993 Annual Reclamation Report, Exhibit 93.1, shows [he areas that were graded during
1993. There were 4.2 acres graded in the Wolf Creek mining area and 26.2 acres graded in
the Wadge mining area. Existing Topography for the Wadge and Wolf Creek Mining areas is
shown on Exhibit 12-9, Post Mining Topography (dated 01/26/93).
Soil and Sooil Monitori ng
Peabody is required by Permit C-80-005 to monitor the salvage, storage, antl redistribution
of soil and spoil handling operations at Seneca II Mine. Specific programs include
documenting soil recovery, verifying soil redistribution thickness, determining final
graded spoil quality, determining soil fertility, evaluating plant rooting characteristics,
recording [he source of replaced soil, and completing an annual soil balance. the
following sections present the soil and spoil monitoring data for the 1993 calendar year.
Soil Recovery Documentation. Soil recovery limits and depths were recorded on [he soil map
by Peabody's soil scientist on April 13, June 11, August 13, and October 14 to document the
actual thickness of soil recovered during the 1993 field season. Color photographs of the
soil profile and landscape were taken to verify [he thickness of soil recovered. The field
notes and photographs for each soil observation site are on file a[ [he Peabody Western
Division office in Flagstaff, Arizona.
This quality control information is used to verity soil salvage estimates predicted from
the baseline soil survey, confirm soil map unit types, justify salvage thickness, and
evaluate soil suitability. About 0.9 acres of mixed brush sandstone-derived soils were
salvaged in advance of [he 4olf Creek pit. Observations indicated very suitable loamy soil
was salvaged down [o the fractured sandstone. The thickness of recovered soil ranged from
1.0 to 3.0 feet.

1
