cover by lifeform are compiled in Table 24. Statistical adequacy of sampling is reviewed in Table
• ~ 25. The list of plant species observed during these studies in reclaimed and reference areas are
present in Appendix 2, Table 26. Seed mixes applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in
years 1981 through 2000 are included in Appendix 3. Photographs of representative samples in
the reclaimed areas sampled in 2004, as well as photographs of the Alkali Sagebrush, Mountain
Brush, and Sagebrush reference areas are included in Appendix 4. Graphs of vegetation and
climate data are presented in Figures 1 through 10 of this report.
In the cover descriptions below, species listed as "also present" were not encountered during
point-intercept sampling but were present within one meter of either side of the 50m sample
transect line. Cover percentages referred to in the following results as "percent of total vegetation
cover" are relative, all-hit vegetation values. Percentages are rounded to facilitate discussion of
the results of vegetation monitoring in 2004.
1997 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 1-4)
COVER
• (Table 1)
Introduced perennial cool season grasses were the dominant lifeform observed in the 1997
reclaimed areas in 2004. They composed 29 percent of total vegetation cover. Of this, over half
was cover by smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis). Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum
intermedium) composed'/. of this total. Native perennial cool season grasses occupied 22
percent of total vegetation cover; this total shared by low levels of cover by several species.
Western wheatgrass (Pascopyum smithii) composed '/< of the lifeform total and thickspike
wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus fm. dasystachya) composed 1/51b. Also prevalent were native
annual and biennial fortis, accounting for 13.2 percent of total vegetation cover. This total was
predominantly composed of big fruit willowherb (Epilobium brachycarpum). Of note, musk thistle
(Carduus nutans ssp. macrolepis), bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare), houndstongue (Cynoglossum
officinale), and Canada thistle (Breea arvensis) were observed in the area.
Total vegetation cover was 48.2 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock
averaged 0.65, 21.8, 22.5, and 6.8 percent, respectively. Average species density was 26.3
species per 100sq.m.
C~
