above, production may have increased with two or three more
weeks of growth. As with cover, production is found to be
higher in the slope area than in the flat portion of the
' grassland community.
' Woody stem density: (Table 5; summary in Table 11).
' An average number of 119 stems per acre was measured.
' The Amelanchier stems encountered within quadrats were small
seedlings and did not appear to be much more than one or two
' years old. Thus, while it is encouraging that seedlings are
establishing, the danger still exists that a bad water year or
' heavy grazing could deleteriously affect the seedlings, and,
therefore, the woody stem density.
Species diversity: (Table 7; summary in Table 12).
1
A total of 13 species were encountered through 12 cover
transects placed in the grassland community. Twelve species
' were recorded in the slope area (8 transects) while only six
were recorded in the flat area (2 transects).
' The grassland community was not found to have
' successfully met the species diversity standard in all
respects. Perennial fortis combine to exceed the minimum 5 ~
relative cover required (49.1 ~) and Table lla shows that
three woody species were found within the community as
required. However, only two grasses contribute over 5 ~
1
13
1
