Introduced annual and biennial (orbs averaged 20.1 percent of total vegetation <br />cover for this area. Twolobe speedwell (Pocilla biloba) contributed more than one-half of this <br />lifeform's total. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) contributed one-fifth of this lifeform's total. Jim Hill <br />mustard contributed one-eighth and yellow sweetclover contributed nearly one-tenth of this <br />lifeform's total. Introduced perennial cool season grasses averaged 18.3 percent of total <br />vegetation cover. Nearly one-third of this was contributed by smooth brome. Intermediate <br />wheatgrass contributed nearly one-fourth of this lifeform's total. Orchard grass and hard sheep <br />fescue together contributed nearly one-third of the total. Introduced perennial (orbs comprised <br />14.6 percent of the total vegetation cover. Alfalfa and Cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer) each <br />contributed nearly half of this lifeform's total. Canada thistle (Breea arvensis) contributed the <br />remainder of the total. Native perennial forbs averaged 9.1 percent of total vegetation cover. <br />While fourteen species were found in this area, only three contributed measurably to the total. <br />Blue flax (Adenolium lewisii) accounted for nearly half of this lifeform's total. Rocky Mountain <br />penstemon (Penstemon strictus), and western yarrow (Achilles lanulosa) provided the rest of the <br />total. Introduced annual grasses accounted for 7.3 percent of the total vegetation cover. More <br />than three-fourths were comprised of cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum), and the remaining fourth <br />by Japanese brome (Bromus~aponicus). Sig sagebrush, a native shrub, contributed all of 2.3 <br />percent of this lifeform's total vegetation cover. Seven other species were found in this area, but <br />did not contribute to the total. Native annual and biennial forbs averaged 0.9 percent of the total <br />vegetation cover. <br />Total vegetation cover was 35.8 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values <br />were 1.0, 29.5, 27.67 and 6.0 percent respectively. Species density averaged 26.8 species per <br />100 sq. m. <br />Production (Table 5) <br />• Alfalfa contributed 99.9 pounds per acre in the 1997 reclamation area. Other species than alfalfa <br />contributed 1,076 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous production for all other species averaged <br />1175.9 pounds per acre. <br />Woody Plant Density (Table 6) <br />Native shrubs averaged 1,092.7 stems per acre. Mountain snowberry contributed two-fifths of the <br />total. One-fifth was provided by Saskatoon serviceberry, big sagebrush and bitterbrush (Purshia <br />Mdentata). The balance was comprised of Wood's rose (Rosa woodsii), Gambel's oak (Quercus <br />gambelii), chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp. melanocarpa) and rubber rabbit brush <br />(Chrysothamnus nauseosus). <br />1999 Reclaimed Area <br />(Photographs 9-12) <br />Cover (Table 7) <br />Introduced annual and biennial forbs averagetl 51.9 percent of total vegetation cover for this area. <br />Twolobe speedwell contributed more than one-third of this lifeform's total. Russian thistle <br />(Salsola australis) and Jim Hill mustard each contributed one-fourth of the total. Pennycress <br />contributed one-tenth of this lifeform's total. Yellow sweet cover, devil's shoestrings (Polygonum <br />arenastrum), and hounds tongue together contributed nearly one-tenth of this lifeform's total. Ten <br />other species were present but did not contribute to total vegetation cover. Native perennial cool <br />season grasses comprised 27.1 of the total vegetation cover. Mountain brome (Ceratochloa <br />carinata) contributed three-fifths of this lifeform's total. Slender wheatgrass and western <br />wheatgrass each comprised almost nearly one-fifth of this lifeform's cover. Agassiz bluegrass, <br />Sandburg bluegrass and tickspike wheatgrass were other contributors. Introduced perennial cool <br />season grasses averaged 13.1 percent of total vegetation cover. Nearly three-fifths of this was <br />contributed by orchard grass. Two fifths of the total was comprised of intermediate wheatgrass. <br />Green bristlegrass provided the remainder. Native perennial forbs averaged 3.7 percent of total <br />vegetation cover. While thirteen species were found in this area, only four contributed <br />
