• measurably to the total. Blue flax (Adenolium lewisir) and western yarrow (Achilles lanulosa) <br />each contributed two-fifths of this lifeform's total. Together tailcup lupine and American vetch <br />contributed one-fourth of the total. Nine other species were observed in this area. Native annual <br />and biennial forbs contributed 1.9 percent of iota! vegetation cover. Introduced annual grasses <br />accounted for 1.4 percent of total vegetation cover. The remaining 1 percent was comprised of <br />introduced perennial forbs and native shrubs. <br />Total vegetation cover was 26.5 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values <br />were 2.38, 23.88, 41.5, and 5.75 percent respectively. Species density averaged 21.8 species <br />per 100 sq. m. <br />Production (Table 8) ' <br />Alfalfa contributed 14.3 pounds per acre in the 1999 reclamation area. All other species <br />contributed 710.2 pounds per acre. Herbaceous production for all species averaged 724.5 <br />pounds per acre. <br />Woody Plant Density (Table 9) <br />Big sagebrush was the only native shrub observed in the 1999 reclamation area. Total woody <br />plant density was 56.7 stems per acre. <br />1997 Shrub Reclamation Area <br />(Photographs 13-16) <br />Cover (Table 10) <br />Introduced annual and biennial forbs averaged 37.0 percent of total vegetation cover for this area. <br />• Hound's tongue accounted for two-fifths of this lifeform's total. Yellow sweetcolver contributed <br />one-fourth of the total. Jim Hill mustard and Twolobe speedwell together contributed nearly one- <br />fourth of this lifeform's total. Musk thistle (Carduus nutans ssp. Macrolepis) and <br />early stickseed (Laooula redowskii) contributed the rest of the balance. Introduced annual <br />grasses averaged 23.3 percent of total vegetation cover. Japanese brome contributed nearly <br />nine-tenths. Cheatgrass accounted for the remainder. Canada thistle, an introduced perennial <br />forb also contributed 23.3 percent of total vegetation cover. Native perennial cool season <br />grasses provided 9.6 percent of total vegetation cover. Mountain brome was the main contributor <br />and accounted for more than two-thirds of this lifeform's total. Other contributors included slender <br />wheagrass and Agassiz bluegrass. Native annual and biennial forbs accounted for 2.7 percent of <br />total vegetation cover. The only contributor from this lifeform was bigfruit willowherb (Eoilobium <br />brachycarpum). Native shrubs contributed 2.7 percent of total vegetation cover. Saskatoen <br />serviceberry and silver sagebrush (Senphidium canum) each contributed one half of this lifeform's <br />total. Introduced perennial cool season grasses accounted for 1.4 percent of total vegetation <br />cover. <br />Total vegetation cover was 29.2 percent. Litter, bare soil, and rock cover values were 29.6, 35.6, <br />and 5.6 percent respectively. Species density averaged 14.6 species per 100 sq. m. <br />Woody Plant Density (Table 11) <br />Total woody plant density for the 1997 shrub reclamation area was 995.6 stems per acre. <br />Saskatoon serviceberry and Gambel's oak each contributed one-third of the total. Chokecherry <br />accounted for one-fourth of the total. Wood's rose and big sagebrush accounted for the <br />remainder. <br />10 <br />
