• 1994 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 1-4)
Cover (Table 1)
Introduced perennial (orbs averaged 53.0 percent of the total vegetation cover. This lifeform was
comprised mainly of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) which contributed two-thirds of the total. Cicer
milkvetch (Astragalus cicer) contributed nearly one-fifth and Canada thistle (Breea arvensis)
contributed the balance. Introduced perennial cool season grasses averaged 24.2 percent of the
total vegetation cover. More than half of this was contributed by intermediate wheatgrass
(Thinopyrum intermedium). Orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) contributed one-sixth of this
lifeform's total. Minor contributors were smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis), hard sheep fescue
(Festuca ovina var. duriuscula), and timothy (Phleum pratense). Native perennial cool season
grasses accounted for 13.0 percent of the total vegetation cover. More than two-fifths of this was
contributed by Agassiz bluegrass (Poo agassizensis). Giant wildrye aka basin wildrye, (Leymus
cinereus) averaged nearly one-fifth of this lifeform's total. Other minor contributors were fescue
(Festuca saximontana), Sandburg bluegrass (Poo secunda), slender wheatgrass (Elymus
trachycaulus) and western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithir). Introduced annual and biennial
forbs averaged 3.9 percent of the total with two minor contributors: yellow sweetclover (Melilotus
officinalis) and Jim Hill mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum). Minor contributors include hound's
tongue (Cynoglossum officinale), twolobe speedwell (Pocilla biloba) and satisfy (Tragopogon
dubius ssp. major). Native perennial forbs accounted for 3.0 percent of the total vegetation cover.
Blue flax (Adenolinum lewisii) and Rocky Mountain penstemon {Penstemon strictus), together,
contributed three-fifths of the total. Three other species contributed to the total. Native annual
and biennial forbs and introduced annual grasses each contributed 1.2 percent of total vegetation
cover. Moss accounted for 0.3 percent of total vegetation cover.
• Total vegetation cover was 51.5 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values
were 1.67, 32.83, 11.17 and 2.83 percent respectively. Species density averaged 15.9 species
per 100 sq. m.
Production (Table 2)
Herbaceous production for alfalfa averaged 1,247.3 pounds per acre. Herbaceous production for
alf other species averaged 1,250.9 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous production averaged
2,498.1 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density (Table 3)
Total woody plant density averaged 56.7 individuals per acre. Native shrubs accounted for 52.6
percent of total density. Chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp. Melanocarpa) and Big sagebrush
each accounted for nearly two-fifths. Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) accounted
for one-sixth while silver sagebrush (Seriphidium canum) provided the balance. Quaking aspen
(Populus tremuloides) contributed 4.0 trees per acre.
1997 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 5-8)
Cover (Table 4)
Native perennial cool season grasses comprised 27.4 of the total vegetation cover. Western
wheatgrass comprised almost one-third of this lifeform's cover. Green needlegrass (Nassella
viridula) and basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) each contributed about one-ninth of this lifeform's
. total. Slender wheatgrass and mountain brome (Ceratochloa carinata) together averaged nearly
one-fifth. Minor contributors were Nelson needlegrass (Achnatherum nelsoni~), thickspike
