•

(2) The additional monitoring portion of this report consists of three
separate sections; a discussion of the results of an annual rill
and gully inspection, an evaluation of revegetation success, and a
report on the hydrologic status of the Bourg Mine which underwent
final reclamation during the Fall of 1988.
Rill and Gully Inspection
A rill and gully inspection was conducted at the Bourg
property on April 26, 1990. At that time it was noted that
the sediment control system had, for the most part, worked as
designed. Spring runoff was somewhat lower than average. All
terraces appeared to be in good condition. No new rilling was
evidenced.
The rill along the east side of the 1988 reclamation near
the edge of the 1984 reclamation had not increased
significantly in size. It was determined by Walden Coal
Company personnel that the most prudent course of action was
to stabilize it. Hay bales were placed in the rill in order
to reduce flow velocity and trap sediment.
The rill along the west perimeter road remained stable
throughout the runoff season. There is evidence of some
vegetation establishment, however some extra seed was
broadcast onto the lower portion of the rill in order to
encourage faster coverage. Due to the size and location of
this rill, the MLRD staff wanted to classify this rill as a
drainage ditch. Because the subject area had historically
contained a drainage and because this area was a logical
location for a permanent drainage, Walden Coal has applied for
a technical revision to include a permanent gully into the
Bourg Mine permit. Approval of that revision is pending. The
culvert which runs under the perimeter road near the former
shop pad will be removed.
A settlement crack located at the bottom of the slope at
the north end of the property has been filled with topsoil and
seeded. Walden Coal Company staff will continue to monitor
that crack.
Another rill was discovered on August 7, 1990 during a
topsoil depth survey. It is located in the center of the
property (see attached map), and appears to be relatively
stable due to good perennial vegetative cover. Walden Coal
will place hay bales in the rill in order to ensure its
stability.
