• Gambel oak seed collected from the mine site and from aspen seed collected from regional
native sources. The seedlings were grown and planted by Bitterroot Native Growers, Inc.
(BNG) of Hamilton, Montana. Plantings were completed in the fall of 1992 in reclaimed
sites which were disced several times during the growing season to control established
herbaceous vegetation and prepare the site for planting. The heavy discing created
numerous planting microsites. Deer-Away repellent was placed on all planted seedlings.
Observations of fall plantings have indicated this repellent is effective in reducing
browse damage following planting. Gambel oak seedlings were inoculated with mycellium of
mycorrhizel fungi that was grown at the BNC nursery. The source of the mycorrhizal fungi
inoculant was from soil collected from native Gambel oak stands et [he Seneca I1 Mine.
Survey or control of noxious weeds was carried out in the areas shown on Exhibit 92.5
Because of the extensive nature of the 1992 weed control activities and the scattered spot
control areas, specific sites which were sprayed may not be shown. Those areas where
control activities were more extensive are shown on Exhibit 92.5 es shaded areas (see
legend). Survey and monitoring routes ere also shown on this exhibit. Canada thistle
(Cirsium arvense) was the primary target species in all control areas, with lesser activity
• directed towards areas of whitetop (Carderie dreba). Monitoring was conducted in 1992 to
determine the need or level of retreatment necessary for areas sprayed in 1991. The
applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of 22k Tordon and 2.5 gallons of
2, 4-D amine with 250 galldns of water. A spot spray gun was used [o concentrate control
activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent desirable vegetation.
The herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado State Extension Service, was
mixed end applied under the supervision of the Seneca Mine Reclamation Supervisor Mho is a
certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue to be monitored in 1993 for
effectiveness end necessary retreatment.
Revegetetion monitoring was conducted during the summer of 1992 by ESCO Associates, Inc. on
permanently revegeteted Brea s. Monitoring areas included two, four, end seven year old
reclamation, the grazed Yedge Pasture area, a 1991 addition to this pasture, 13 shrub
planting areas, end two native reference areas. The 1992 annual revegetation monitoring
report is included with this submittal es a separate document (ESLO, 1993).
Grazing. Livestock were grazed from July 25 through September 13, 1992 in the Wadge
• Pasture area of the Seneca II Mine. The pasture configuration is shown an Exhibit 92.5. A
total of 156 long yearlings were grazed during [he 50-day period. Assuming each long
7
