Creek areas. This included the reclaimed Wolf Creek pit and highwall area, along with the
• distu[bance associated with [he removal of stockpiles T, AA, BB, and 00, see drawing 5298-
9. Alsu, SCC is reporting the area along the access road to sediment pond 004 along the
south end of the perml [. This area uas seeded Sn 1989 but was overlooked in the repotting
of seeded areas so it appears o n [his report.
A total of 29,680 shrub seedlings were planted in 4 concentrated planting areas in 1998,
see drawing 5298 -4 A. Table 98.5, lists planting areas, approximate acreages, species
composition of each area, and the total numbers planted by species for each area. All plant
materials were one-year-old containerized nursery stock developed from bitterbrush,
chokecherry, Gambel oak, servi ceberry, snowbe rry, Woods rose and boxelder seed collected
from Che Seneca II ml ne site.
The seedlings were grown and planted by Bitterroot Native Growers, Inc. (BNG~ of Hamilton,
Montana. Tree Guard browse repellent was placed on all planted seedlings. All seedlings
were treated with a mycorrhizal Eungl inocul um that was developed at the BNG nursery. The
source of the mycorrhizal inoculum was from soil collected in native mountain brush stands
a[ the Seneca II Mine. Plantings were completed in late September 1998 in reclaimed sites
• whSch were disked several times durl ng [he growl ng season to control established herbaceous
vegetation and prepare the site for planting. The heavy diskl ng created numerous planting
microsites.
In adtlition [o the tubli ng sites, SCC seeded three plots with shrub seed using shrub seed
mix Sn Table 98.4 at a rate of approximately 15 1b. per acre, see drawing 5298 -4A. 28.6
acres were planted with tubl ings and 11.4 acres were planted with the direct seed in Table
98.4.
Weed Control
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 1998.
Monitoring was conducted in 1998 to determine the need or level of retrea[ment necessary
for areas s prayed in 1997, Canada thistle (Ci rsium arvense) was the primacy target species
Sn all control areas, with lesser activity tlirected towa rds areas of whitetop (Ca rdaria
drabs). The applied herbicide consisted of a tank min of 2. 5 gallons of 22K Tordon and 2.5
gallons of 2, 4,D with 250 gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed in May and June. A
spot spray gun was used to con ce n[ra[e control activit ies on target areas, reducing
potential impacts co adjacent desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix, based on
• recommendat ions from the Colorado State Extension Service, was mixed and applied under [he
supervision of the Seneca Mine Fe clams tion Supervisor who is a certified appllcato r.
