Soil Pit - Spoil Fertility - Spoil pua lity
• Soil fertility and spoil quality samples are collected periodically from shallow postmine
soil pits which are randomly located using a 500 foot grid. The postmine soil pits are also
used to evaluate plant rooting characteristics and to compare soil/spoil profile data with
site specific revegetation data.
Postmine soli pits are placed within reclamation blocks that have been soiled and seeded
fo[ a minimum of three yea [s. Similar minimum time frames are used for me nitocing postmine
vegetation. The permanent vegetation has generally established suf flciently after three to
four years to evaluate interactions between rooting characteristics and soil/spoil quality
(Schafer et. al.r 1989).
Historical soli and spoil quality data for Che 1983 through 1988 reclamation blocks are
presented and discussed in previous Topsoil and Spoil Monitoring reports (PCC, 1987 and
1989) and the Annual Reclamation Reports IPCC, 1991, 1992, 1993, 19941 that have been
submitted to the Di vl sion. Additional soil/spoil fertility samples are planned for the 1999
field season.
Spoil Sampling in the Lennox Highwall Red uct ton Acea
•
SCC is requl red to sample final graded spoil from the Lennox highwa ll reduction area on a
300 foot grid and test for sodium. Exposed sodlc strata with an unsuitable SAR level will
either be burled in the final pit or covered with two to three feet of suitable spoil prior
to soil replacement. No final grading was tnit tat ed in the Lennon highwall reduction area
during the 1998 £l eld season, hence no Lennox spoil samples are presented here.
Wolf Creek Spoil
SCC is required to sample and analyze final glad ed spoil from the Wolf Creek mining area
p rlor to soli replacement. Spoil is sampled on a 300 foot horizontal grid and tested for
pH, acid base potential (ABP1, and soil salinity IEC1. Suitable spoil topd ressi ng (subsoil?
is replaced prior to soil redis[n button where acid strata (pH <5 and ABP <-5) ate
encounteretl. The laboratory analysis data Ss presented in the Lab Da [a Tab and see drawing
S29B-5 for the locations of samples taken and subsoil placement.
1998 Soil Replacement Thickness
SCC is required by CDMG to closely observe and routinely inspect soil replacement thickness
in [he Wadqe and Wolf Creek reclamation areas at Seneca II Mine.
