Total vegetation cover for the 1996 reclamation was 42.4%. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and
• rock accounted for 2.4, 12.2, 33.2, and 9.8 percents respectively. Average species density was
24.8 species per 100 sq.m.
PRODUCTION
(Table 5)
Herbaceous production for alfalfa averaged 155.2 pounds per acre. Herbaceous production for
all other species averaged 2,189.4 pounds per acre for a combined total herbaceous production
value of 2,344.7 pounds per acre.
WOODY PLANT DENSITY
(Table 6)
Total woody plant density averaged 4,281.7 individuals per acre, composed entirely of native
shrubs. Rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus) seedlings and mature individuals
combined averaged 3982.2 stems per acre while big sagebrush accounted for the remaining
299.5 stems/acre.
1998-1999 Reclaimed Area
• (Photographs 9-12)
COVER
(Table 7)
Native perennial forbs and native perennial cool season grasses were co-dominant in this area in
2003, measuring 19.7 percent total vegetation cover. Blue flax (Adenolinum lewisir) was the most
common native perennial forbs with 10.8 percent total vegetationeover. Several otherforbs were
present in lower abundance, such as Western yarrow (Achilles lanulosa) and Rocky Mountain
penstemon (Penstemon strictus). Thickspike wheatgrass and Western wheatgrass, native
perennial cool season grasses, accounted for 6.10 and 4.53 percent of total vegetation cover,
respectively. Eleven other species were also present, measuring less than 3% total vegetation
cover. Also common were introduced perennial cool season grasses, comprising 19% total
vegetation cover. The dominant grass in this lifeform was orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) with
12.2 percent total vegetation cover. Intermediate wheatgrass contributed an additional 4.36
percent. Introduced perennial forbs accounted for 15.2% total vegetation cover, with alfalfa
composing the bulk of the lifeform. 13.4 percent total vegetation cover was made up of
introduced annual and biennial forbs. Jim Hill mustard comprised 4.88 percent, twolobe
speedwell measured 3.66 percent, and pennycress added an additional 2.09 percent total
• vegetation cover. Several other species measured less than one percent total vegetation cover.
8
