Cheatgrass, an introduced annual grass, comprised the bulk of this lifeform, which measured
• 11.5 percent total vegetation cover. Native annual and biennial forbs and native shrubs were
present with less than 2 percent total vegetation cover.
Total vegetation cover was 35.7 percent. Bare soil accounted for 45.94 percent of the total, litter
13.81 percent, rock 3.81 percent, and standing dead 0.75 percent. Average species density was
24.6 species per 100 sq.m.
PRODUCTION
(Table 8)
Total production observed in the 1998-1999 reclaimed areas was 2,335.8 pounds per acre. Of
this, 356.7 pounds per acre was alfalfa and the remaining 1,978.9 pounds per acre was
composed of other species.
WOODY PLANT DENSITY
(Table 9)
Woody plants comprised solely the native shrub lifeform in this area in 2003. 161.9 stems per
acre were counted, the majority of which were big sagebrush (63.1 stems per acre). Bitterbrush
• (Purshia Mdentata} accounted for 45.7 stems per acre and mountain snowberry contributed
another 40.5 stems per acre. Saskatoon serviceberry measured 10.1 stems per acre and
chokecherry added 2.4 stems per acre.
PECOCO Pasture Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 13-16)
COVER

(Table 10)
The dominant lifeform in this reclamation unit was introduced annual and biennial forbs; they
averaged over 38 percent of total vegetation cover. Nearly half of this total was occupied by Jim
Hill mustard, while the remaining half was composed primarily of yellow sweetclover and
pennycress. Also common were the introduced perennial cool season grasses with 33.6 percent
total vegetation cover. The predominant species in this lifeform was intermediate wheatgrass,
occupying 9/10'" of the total. Smooth brome occupied the bulk of the remaining 1/10'". Native
perennial cool season grasses accounted for 11.3 percent total vegetation cover. Basin wildrye
(Leymus cinereus) composed 5.09 percent of total vegetation cover while fescue (Festuca
saximontana) comprised 3.7 percent. Lifeforms present with under 10% total vegetation cover
• included introduced perennial forbs, introduced annual grasses, native annual and biennial forbs,
9
