were disked several times during the growing season to control established herbaceous vegetation and prepare the
site for planting. The heavy disking created numerous planting microsites.
Weed Control
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 2001. Monitoring was conducted in
2001 to determine the need or level of retreatment necessary for areas sprayed in 2000. Canada thistle Cirsium
arvense was the primary target species in all control areas, with lesser activity directed towards aeeas of whitetop
(Cazdazia drabs}, The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of Z.5 gallons of ZZK Tordon and 2.5 gallons of
2,4,D with 250 gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed in May and June. A spot spray gun was used to
concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent desirable vegetation. The
herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado State Extension Service, was mixed and applied by the
Seneca Mine Reclamation Manager who is a certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue to be
monitored in 2002 for effectiveness and necessary retreatment.
Reveeetation Monitorine
Revegetation monitoring of permanently revegetated areas was wnducted during the summer of 2001 by ESCO
Associates, Inc. The 2001 annual revegetation monitoring report is submitted as a separate document (ESCO and
SCC, 2002).
Crazin¢
bong yearlings grazed in the Pecoco Pasture during 2001.On May 15'", 210 head were placed in the Pecoco Pasture.
On July 15'", all cattle were moved off the Pecoco Pasture. This resulted in 171 animal unit months on [he Pecoco
Pasture. Since Seneca was in the process of realigning the fence and working on drainage channels in Wadge
Pasture, no cattle grazed the Wadge pasture in 2001.
This grazing scheme resulted 171 AUMs of grazing in the 210 acre Pecoco Pasture, which produced 276 AUM of
forage based on 2000 field data collected by ESCO. The grazing scheme for the Pecoco pasture resulted in 171
AUMs used. The utilization was 62%.
4
