This caused considerable construction delays.
Testing of the material when placed using actual field procedures indicated that the specified density
and permeability requirements were met when the material was placed drier than originally
specified. Placed at 4-6 percent dry of optimum moisture content, the materiall also resulted in a
fum smooth surface which promoted water run-0ff to a greater extent than w~ten compacted as
originally specified. This change to the material Type 3 placement procedures was approved by the
Division and Design Engineer. Subsequent rains did not render the surface of the material
unsuitable for liner deployment as frequently as before this procedure was implemented, therefore
this procedure was adopted for aU subsequent construction
The results of QA/QC testing performed by SRK on material Type 3 are discussed in Section 6.2.3
and presented in Appendix C.3.
5.4.4 Random Fill
Material Type 4 was used as random fill for general grading and backfilling localized depressions,
such as a small arroyo in the southeast corner of the expansion area, as well as 11or construction of
the north and east dikes. Material Type 4 utilized as fill was placed in 12-inch maximum loose lifts
within two percent of optimum moisture content and compacted to 95 percent of maximum dry
density (ASTM D-698) utilizing a Caterpillaz CP-553 sheepsfoot compactor. Material Type 4 was
also utilized to construct access roads for liner cover/drain layer placement. For this use,
approximately 2 to 3 ft of material Type 4 was placed over the liner cover layer by a Caterpillar
D-8 bulldozer to provide equipment access to other areas.
The results of QA/QC testing performed by SRK on material Type 4 utilized as random fill are
discussed in Section 6.2.4 and presented in Appendix C.4.
sY 9 Jxt o. --
