1
San Luu Project Phue n Rain 1 Expansion -Final Construction
The results of QA/QC testing for the Embankment raise fill are discussed in Section 6.2.1 and
presented in Appendix C.1.
' 5.4.2 Liner Cover/Drainage Blanket
Material Type 2 was specified as the liner cover/drainage blanket material in the Earthwork
' Technical Specifications (Appendix F of the Phase II, Raise 1 Design Report). The variability of
the borrow sources for Type 2 material was such that a readily available homoEeneous source did
not exist. Average material properties of the borrow were of a gravelly silty sand, in general
compliance with the Type 2 material specification. Discrete zones of the borrow, however, were
' of sandy silt and of gravelly sand and required blending and screening to produce a more uniform
material. The resulting material was free of particles in excess of 1.5 inches in diameter. The
acceptable gradations for this material type were slightly modified by the Designer to allow some
' variability of the mid-range grain size with no change to the performance characteristics. The
maximum allowable percent passing the iU200 sieve remained at 35 percent.
The Contractor's borrow procedures and material fiandling precluded conforma>,ce testing of liner
cover/drainage blanket material prior to placement on the liner in acres 1 through 23 as depicted on
Drawing 14719-102. Therefore, a conformance testing program consisting of ]I sample for every
'h acre of liner cover was adopted prior to final acceptance of all liner wver which had been placed
in those areas. For the remainder of the expansion area, the Contractor's liner cover borrow and
placement procedures were modified with the use of a screening plant to ensure removal of
' oversized material and to allow for conformance testing prior to transport from the borrow source.
The material was loaded with front end loaders into haul trucks, deposited adjacant to the prepared
liner surface and spread with a D-8 Caterpillar bulldozer.
The resulu of QA/QC testing performed by SRK on the liner cover material are discussed in Section
' 6.2.2 and presented in Appendu C.2.
5.4.3 Liner Sub-base
Material Type 3 was utilized for the liner sub-baselclay liner component as specified. Placement
of this material as specified, 95 percent maximum dry density at plus 3 percent to minus 2 percent
of optimum moisture content, resulted in an acceptable final product. However, wet weather during
' ay g sect o.
