' San Luis PlojeU Phue U Raise 1 Expansion - Pinsl Construction Report
' 5.4.1 Fatbanl®ent Raise Fill
' The original specifications for construction of the embankment raise set forth in the Design Report
dated July 13, 1993 called for material Type 1 fill for wnstructing the raise as a homogeneous,
' mono-fill structure. The gradation limits for material Type 1 were revised by the Engineer to allow
the use of material with slightly greater fines content (percent passing a No. 200 sieve). This
revision was approved by the Division on January 4, 1994 as Technical Revisions TR-Ol6 to Permit
No. M-88-112. The revised specification for this material resulted in a fill material which is similar
' in nature to the Type 2 material used for the upstream face of the initial embankment. The
following gradation limits were adopted for the raise fill embankment material:
' U.S. Standard Sieve Size 96 Finer By Weight
' 3/a inch > 65
iY 4 45-95
' ~ 40 35-90
#200 < 35
Where in contact with the VI.DPE liner at the ends of the embankment, the maximum allowable
particle size for this material was specified as ltfi inches, elsewhere the maximum particle size was
' specified as six inches.
' Where significant oversized material was encountered in the fill material, as placed on the
embankment, this oversize was removed by working to the outside and inside slope of the raise, or
broken down in-place by the weight of the Caterpillar D-9 bulldozer spreading the fill.
1
Embankment raise fill was compacted to a minimum density of 85 percent of the maximum dry
' density (ASTM D-698). Development of a method specification to achieve this minimum density
proved acceptable. The fill was placed in maximum three foot thick loose lifts and compacted
' through trafficking by Caterpillar Model 777 haul trucks with an empty gross vehicle weight of
approximately 65 tons. The haul truck traffic was routed to provide coverage of the fill. The entire
thickness of each lift was tested for minimum density requirements as set forth in the Design Report
' and found to meet these requirements. On the shoulders of the embankment, a Caterpillar Model
CP-553 sheepsfoot compactor was utilized to achieve passing densities.
1 ay ~ sect o.
