Canada thistle ranked third in severity and was a confined to highly disturbed areas and
roads. The base of Eagle Park Reservoir, Three Dam, Mayflower Dam and along the
roads north of Mayflower tailings pond were patches of Canada thistle.
Rare occurrences of mayweed chamomile were found in isolated patches. Mayweed
chamomile was found on biosolid piles and treated prior to mixing these piles. A small
patch of mayweed chamomile along the road just east of Searle Gulch was found. John
Reed wetland had a sparse population of mayweed chamomile that was hand pulled prior
to flowering.
Rare occurrences of musk thistle were present on the mine and confined to roads and
highly disturbed areas.
All spot treatment applications were a tank mix of Tordon 22K and 2,4-D Amine
herbicides. These herbicides aze broadleaf selective, reducing injury and death of
desirable native grass species. Surfactant R-11 to increase leaf adhesion and blue marker
dye to track applications were mixed with the herbicides. Herbicide labels and MSDS
sheets for all chemicals applied are available in Appendix B. All applications spot treated
targeted weeds with ATV mounted spray rigs or backpack sprayers.
Future Pest Mana¢ement Recommendations
High density, large populations of yellow toadflax were found present over all areas of
the mine described. Yellow toadflax is a highly aggressive perennial that is well suited to
high elevations at Climax. Mature plants can produce up to 30,000 seeds annually that
will remain dormant in the soil for up to ten years. Although they do not germinate well
in native plant stands, they are opportunistic in disturbed aeeas. Once established in new
sites they will rapidly spread into surrounding native vegetation and become increasingly
difficult to manage. It is important to manage these species by closely monitoring and
treating newly disturbed aeeas as a preventative measure.
Climax Mine: IPM Report 3 2/22/2007
