' Honeywood Coal Company
1992 Annual Hydrologic Report
' Page 3
irrigation ditch is also monitored to supplement the alluvial well
' monitoring data.
The purpose of the alluvial wells is to determine if the quality of
water in the alluvium is impacted by the mining operation. Two
' wells are utilized at each location because it is possible that the
water in the alluvium up gradient of the irrigation ditch will be
impacted, yet the water in the alluvium down gradient is not
impacted. Since an alluvial valley floor is down gradient of the
irrigation ditch, the distinction between the two monitoring points
is important.
AW-4 and AW-5, located in Bramiers Draw, were dry during 1992. AW-
6 contained water during all four quarters of 1992. AW-7 was dry
during the last two quarters of 1992. The Reed Chatfield Ditch,
' monitoring point R-1, had flow during the second and third quarters
of 1992, during the irrigation season.
' The quality of the water in AW-6 and AW-7 is similar. It appears
that the water in AW-7 is diluted slightly by seepage water from
the Reed Chatfield Ditch.
t AW-3 is located within the permit area in Section 33 Creek. This
alluvial well has been dry during four years of monitoring, 1989
through 1992.
Bedrock Wells
' Two bedrock wells are located adjacent to the mining area and one
well is located within the permit area. BW-1, located east of the
mining area has contained measurable quantities of water during all
eight quarters of monitoring. During 1992, three samples were
' obtained and analyzed. During the fourth quarter of 1992, the well
was inaccessible.
' BW-2 is located in the northwest corner of the permit area. This
well has not contained measurable quantities of water during nine
monitoring quarters, from the fourth quarter of 1990 through 1992.
' BW-3 is located southeast of the mining area. This well has
contained measurable quantities of water during two of nine
calendar quarters, from the fourth quarter of 1990 through 1992.
' During the first quarter of 1992 a sample was obtained. During the
remainder of 1992 the well was noted as dry.
' Consumptive Use
Consumptive use of water at the mine is for dust control. During
the year a water truck obtained water from Naturita Creek as
1
