_ the piezometer are presented in Appendix C. <br />' No rock coring was performed, since failure of intact rock was <br />not anticipated to be a problem associated with the mine bench, <br />and therefore, was not evaluated during the field investigations. <br />- Test pits were excavated adjacent to Test Borings No. 1, 2, 3, 5 <br />' and 6 (Figure 2). These pits were excavated to depths up to <br />approximately 7 feet. Density testing was performed in the test <br />pits to help determine the existing conditions of the slope. <br />Test Pit Logs showing the materials encountered and results of <br />- the density tests are included in Appendix B. <br /> <br />2.3 SITE CONDITIONS <br />As expected, the drilling, visual observations, and subsurface <br />investigations performed within the mine bench showed a <br />variability of materials. The materials varied from a deposit of <br />primarily coal waste, low to medium dense sands, clays, gravels, <br />and interbedded cobbles and boulders, which was overlain by a <br />variable thickness of colluvial materials. However, the <br />deposition of the colluvial materials and the relative conditions <br />created through past instability of the slope and past slope <br />failures made it difficult and in some areas impossible to <br />determine the difference between fill and colluvial deposits. <br />• The colluvial and fill materials were underlain by interbedded <br />sandstones, claystone and shales, varying in depth below existing <br />ground surface from 7 to 33 feet, with higher depth areas <br />9 <br />
