Information on pond dischazges and sediment pond inspections follows the hydrologic monitoring program information. DESCRIPTION OF THE HYDROLOGIC MONTI'ORING PROGRAM The hydrologic program followed for the Cazbon Junction Mine is described below. With the approval of Technical Revision 03 in April 1997, the original hydrologic monitoring program for the mine was modified. Technical Revision 03 modified the sampling frequency for springs and groundwater wells to semi-annual, with the exception of groundwater well 95-1, which was to be sampled quarterly in 1997, and semi-annually thereafter. The springs to be monitored were identified as 1, 2, and 4. The groundwater wells to be monitored were 17-B, 82-1, 82-4, and 95-1. During the review of Technical Revision 08 in late 1997, an in-depth analysis of the hydrologic monitoring program was undertaken. It was acknowledged that several springs and groundwater wells had been either misidentified or identified with multiple designations. The hydrologic monitoring program was modified in the permit text to clearly identify the springs and groundwater wells to be sampled. The current hydrologic monitoring program (pages 5-48 and 5-49 of the permit • document) requues the semi-annual sampling and analysis of Springs 1 (upper Carbon Junction Canyon), 3 (REA Canyon below the mine), and 4 (Cazbon Junction Canyon below the mine) when flowing, and the semi-annual sampling and analysis of groundwater wells 17-B (above the mine), 94-1 (mid-mine), and 95-1 (below the mine). With the reclamation of the South Pit in 2003, well 94-1 was closed and backfilled, therefore no additional data will be forthcoming from that well. The locations of the springs and wells currently monitored are depicted on Figure 1. During the permit renewal process in 1998, Technical Revision 09 clarified the pazameters to be analyzed when sampling is conducted (current text pages 5-49 and 5-50). Snrine Monitorin¢: Water Year 2005 Spring 1 (Upper Carbon Junction Canyon) was documented as flowing during the spring of water year 2005. This spring had been dry since the early 1980's. Flow returned in water year 2003 (first calendaz quarter of 2003), and flow was again encountered this past spring. Flow is likely a result of significant snowpack and melt resulting from snow pack above the spring during the winter. Spring 3 (REA SPG #3) was flowing during the April 2005 and October 2005. Spring 3 was sampled both times. Spring 4 (CJ-LO-SPG #4) was also flowing during April and October 2005. Spring monitoring included a firll-suite laboratory analysis as well as collection of field parameters. Flow measurements were only for Spring 3 during the Apri12005 sampling.
