OAKIiIDGE ENERGY, INC.
CARBON JUNCTION MINE (C-1992-080)
ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
WATER YEAR 2005
The Oakridge Energy, Inc. Cazbon junction Mine (CDMG Permit No. C-1992-080) is
located approximately 2 '/z miles southeast of Durango, Colorado. The mine is located on
an azea known as Ewing Mesa near the junction of Highways 160 and 550. The mine site
is located in the upper drainage basin of Carbon Junction Canyon. Carbon Junction
Canyon is an intermittent tributary of the Animas River. Much of the Cazbon Junction
Canyon drainage has a steep grade with a total drainage basin of 0.8 squaze miles.
Hydrologic sampling and data collection has been conducted at the Cazbon Junction Mine
since 1982. The hydrologic sampling program is in place in order to protect water quality
during the life of the mining and reclamation permit. The mine site was originally
permitted by the Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG), formerly IvI'med Land
Reclamation Division, in 1983 and re-permitted in 1993. To date, coal mining activity has
been initiated on the site on a minor scale. The extent of coal mining activities at the
Cazbon Junction Mine included opening both the North and South pits. Ancillary activity
included construction of a permanently reclaimed spoils azea, sediment control structures,
topsoil stockpiles, and pads for equipment. Permanent reclamation at the mine site was
initiated in 1998 and included the final regrading of the permanently reclaimed spoils azea
and initiation of reconstruction of the Snal configuration for Carbon Junction Canyon. In
2003, backfilling, grading, and topsoiling of the South Pit was completed. The South Pit
and ancillary areas were ceded to the Four Comers Materials Ewing Mesa #1 operation
and incorporated into that CDMG construction materials mining and reclamation permit.
This report includes hydrologic data for the 2005 water year (October 2004 through
September 2005) and the fourth calendar quarter of 2005. Tables 1-5 present the
summaries of water sampling data for springs and wells in the monitoring program.
Figures in this report show trends from water year 1995 to water year 2005. With this
data, trends in ground water and surface water may be analyzed. Figures were not
generated for chemical constituents that were analyzed consistently at or below the current
detection level. Hydrologic data were collected for the Cazbon Junction Mine from 1982
to 1995, except for the second, third, and fourth calendar quarters of 1988. These data
and along-term analysis of ground water and surface water at the Cazbon Junction Mine
were presented in the 1995 Annual Hydrologic Report. Additional information is
presented in subsequent annual hydrology reports in addition to this report. Locations of
monitored springs and wells are found on the well and spring map within the permit
document and Figure 1 in this report.
In addition to the hydrologic monitoring undertaken for springs and groundwater wells at
the mine, monitoring of discharges from the sediment ponds are undertaken.
