. Wel! Monitorins: Water Year 2005
The groundwater wells that were monitored in water year 2005 were 17-B (upgradiem of
the mine) and 95-1 (located downgradient of the mine}. Samples from Wells 17-B and
95-1 were collected once during the second water year quarter (April 14, 2005). Field
pazameters were collected for the April 2005 sampling for both wells. A full-suite analysis
of parameters was conducted for the April 2005 sampling. Field parameters were
obtained in December 2005 for Well 17-B, but CDS personnel could not locate Well 95-1
during that sampling event.
SAMPLING METHODS
To ensure sampling consistency, CDS, Inc. personnel collected all water samples at the
Carbon Junction Mine during the 2005 water year. All water samples were analyzed at
Green Analytical Laboratories, Inc. laboratory in Durango.
Grab samples for the wells were taken by lowering a sample bottle into the wells with a
rope attached to a piece of PVC pipe. When the sample bottle reached the water it was
filled and retrieved. Appropriately sized and labeled bottles for ground water sampling
were obtained from the laboratory prior to sampling.
~ • A depth meter lowered down the well on a spool measured depth to water. The meter
indicates when water is encountered by a beep (generated by an electric current), and
measurements are taken. Meters were also used to determine pH, temperature, and
electrical conductivity from the grab samples.
Grab samples were collected from the springs as close to the visible source of water as
possible in an area of undisturbed flow. Appropriately sized and labeled bottles for
surface water sampling were obtained from the laboratory prior to sampling. Meters were
also used to determine pH, temperature, and electrical conductivity from the spring flow in
the field.
Both sediment ponds 001 and 002 were discharging during the January 30-31, 2005
inspection. Sedimem pond 002 also was discharging during the April 5, 2005 inspection.
Michael Savage of Savage and Savage, Inc. was present during the dischazges and
obtained a compliance sample for the CDPS permit. Samples were chilled on ice and
delivered to Green Analytical Labs in Durango, Colorado for analysis within one hour of
collection. The sample results for this sample are appended with the discharge monitoring
reports.
Chain of custody for the samples was maintained and these records are appended with the
laboratory summaries.
L~
Carbon Junction Mine Page 3
Mnual Hydrologk Report for Water Year 2006
