' 6.2.4 Tvce 4 Material
' The Contractor shall furnish, transport, and place Type 4 material to the lines and grades, and
in the locations shown on the Drawings and set forth in the Specifications, or as specified by the
' Engineer.
' Type 4 soils shall be utilized for the construction of collection pond berms, tailings
embankments, access roads, and other structures. Type 4 fill shall consist of inorganic soils with
a maximum 6-inch rock size and may include relatively fine-grained rock fills, sand and gravel,
1 sandy soils, and silty or clayey soils. In structures to be constructed of compacted materials such
as the pond berms and access roads, the Type 4 fill shall be placed in 12-inch maximum loose
lifts. Oversized rock shall be removed to the downstream exterior slopes (in the case of pond
berm fill) for slope protection. Pond interior slopes shall have maximum 3/4-inch rock size in
preparation for synthetic material placement. Type 4 materials placed within the main and
' splitter embankments shall be placed per a method specification which will be developed in the
field by the engineer.
The method specification shall define the lift thickness, amount of moisture required and total
number of passes with approved compaction equipment to achieve the minimum density. The
engineer shall perform bulk density tests to determine the maximum density, and verify the
performance of the method specification.
Type 4 fill adjacent to culverts shall be placed in eight-inch maarimum loose lifts within two
percent of optimum moisture content and compacted to 95 percent of maximum dry density
' (ASTM D-698) using hand tampers. The maximum rock size allowed in contact with culverts
shall be I-1/2 inches.
' If materials fall into anon-testable definition per ASTM D-698, a method specification for
compaction shall be developed in the field by the Engineer.
' 6.3 Road Base Fill Type 5 Material
Road base fill shall consist of free draining, durable sands, and gravels with an LA abrasion of
less than 50 percent (500 rev.). Road base fill may be processed locally from mine pit
excavations of waste rock or off-site sources. Road base fill shall be placed in eight-inch
maximum loose lifts, wetted as approved by the Engineer, and compacted by two passes of a
10-ton smooth drum vibratory roller, or equivalent.

LJ
-is-
