' Type 2 material will be in direct contact with the synthetic liner, where utilised as a pervious
' drainage blanket.
The initial dumping shall be confined to an area outside the limits of the lined azea. In no
' instance shall material be directly dumped on the liner. The dumping of material inside the lined
area shall be allowed only when sufficient area has been achieved such that damage to the liner
' will not occur. The material shall be placed such that the final spreading and lBveling produces
a minimum two-ft thickness. To the extent practicable, the bedding material shall be dumped to
minimize the distance the material must be pushed. The Contractor is responsible for
' coordinating the dumping scenario to minimize soil compaction and required pivoting of
vehicles. Hand raking and placement of the material shall be performed, if required, to produce
' the required thickness of material on inclined surfaces.
6.2.3 Tvne 3 Material (Liner Base Material)
' Soils which will be utilized as liner foundation materials shall meet the gradation required for
the Type 3 material as shown below.
U.S. Standard % Finer by
Sieve Size Weieht
3!8 inch >97
a4 > 90
M 10 > 80
q40 95-65
^ u2oo 70-20
If existing materials exposed during stripping operations do not meet this requirement, material
shall be imported from either off-site borrow areas or on-site sources. The final surface shall be
' compacted to 95 percent of the maximum dry density (ASTM D-698) at minus 296 to plus 396
of optimum moisture content. Compaction shall be performed using only smooth-wheel
nonvibratory compactors. The compacted liner base material shall have a permeability of 1.0 X
10-5 cm/sec or less. The engineer shall perform insitu permeability tests on the liner base
materials to verify that 1.0 X 10'5 cm/sec has been achieved.
Rock fragments greater than 3!4 inch which aze exposed shall be removed prior to liner
placement.
' -i4
1
