S.1.2 Handlin~of Material
t The Contractor shall use only the materials obtained from required excavations which meet
applicable specifications, except as allowed by the Engineer. Such materials may be placed in
the designated final locations direct from the excavation, or may be placed in temporary
stockpiles and later placed in the final location as approved by the Engineer. The Contractor
shall perform excavation operations so as to facilitate stockpiling and rehandling of excavated
' material as required.
' 5.1.3 Cuts and Slopes
The Contractor shall inspect all temporary and permanent open~ut excavations on a regulaz
basis for signs of instability. Should signs of instability be noted, the Contractor shall undertake
remedial measures immediately and shall notify the Engineer as soon as possible. It will be the
Contractor's responsibility to remove all loose material from the excavatioh slopes and to
maintain the slopes in a safe and stable condition at all times during the progress of the work.
' Final disposal azea and borrow area cut slopes shall be no steeper than 3:1 for liner installation
construction. Final surfaces shall be smoothed of irregularities to the satisfaction of the
' Engineer. Final disposal area cut surfaces shall be sloped to drain so that no ponding develops
from direct precipitation and runoff.
' 5.1.4 Excess Excavation
' All necessary precautions shall be taken to preserve the material below and beyond the lines of
excavation in the soundest possible condition. Where required to complete the work, all such
excess excavation and overexcavation shall be refilled with materials meeting applicable
requirements and furnished and placed to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
' 5.1.5 DisRgsal of Excavated Materials
Excavated materials that are unsuitable for, or are in excess of, permanent construction
' requirements shall be wasted. Waste piles shall be located outside the limits of the disposal azea
as approved by the Engineer. Placement will not interfere with the natural flaw within storm
' drainage areas, with the operation of the tailings disposal area facilities or other mining
structures. They will neither detract from the appearance of the completed project nor interfere
with the accessibility of the various parts of the work. Waste piles shall be graded and trimmed
to reasonably regular lines and stable slopes.
' -io-
