i ' S.2 Access Roads ' Contractor s access roads shall be planned in such a manner that excavation of said roads shall coincide, to the extent practicable, with the construction of a permanent road and other 1 excavations associated with the project. Prior to development of access roads, the Contractor shall submit a plan showing their location and size for the Engineer's approval. ' S.3 Borrow Areas ' Borrow areas shall be established, as necessary, for bedding materials and supplemental embankment materials. The location, physical dimensions, and depth of stripping shall be ' identified by the Engineer prior to commencement of work requiring such borrow material. Within borrow azeas, cut slopes shall be maintained at 3:1 or less. ' 6.0 FILL MATERIALS ' 6.1 General ' The embankment, disposal area drains, access roads, and other appurtenant facilities incorporate different types of fill material as specified herein. Fill materials shall be obtained from approved sites and local borrow areas. Road base and drain materials shall be either produced in the ' vicinity of the site or imported. Selective borrowing of materials will be required. No embankment or synthetic materials shall be placed until the foundation and subgrade preparations have been completed and approved by the Engineer. Subsequent placement of fill shall be made only in areas approved by the Engineer. Placement of the fill shall be done to the lines and grades shown on the Drawings. ' Fill shalt be placed in neaz horizontal lifts unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Fill placement procedures and equipment shall be organized and suitable for wnstructing a relatively uniform fill meeting minimum density and/or compactive effort requirements, if required. Fill ' surfaces shall be graded to drain as materials aze placed. The Contractor shall dewater or provide drainage for ponded water conditions in fill areas. ' The procedures for the construction using fill materials shall be discussed with, and approved by, the Engineer prior to placement. In particulaz, construction procedures shall be such to ' prevent damage to synthetic liners and contamination or damage to drain pipes. Construction procedures shall incorporate methods for minimizing traffic over initial lifts of fill above these -i t- 1
