UPDATE ]999: There was a minor increase in mining acreage, but no increase in affected land.
Following is an inventory of the acreage of the various parcels of land shown on this map.
Map Category Acreage
Total Affetted Land (this map only) 119.62
Previous Reclamation 11.0
Mining 10.0
Topsoil Stockpiles 3.4
UPDATE 2000: The changes from 1999 were not very great. Slightly
more land is included in the mining category due to some expansion on the extreme
south end of the site. However, there was also some reduttion in mining extent
elsewhere. The amount of reclaimed land has been reduced because of the storm
damages that occurred in 1999. That adjustment was not made last yeaz. Very little
else changed.
Following is an inventory of the acreage of the various parcels of land shown on this
map. (NOTE: Acreages were calculated using a different computer program than was
the case in 1999 and therefore are slightly different from 1999 even though the on-the-
ground area has not changed significantly.)
Map Category Acreage
Total Affected Land (this map only) 110.04
Previous Reclamation 9.7
Mining 11.0
Topsoil Stockpiles 2.9
Topsoil Stockpiling: Topsoils are continuing to be contributed to this operation from
various projects throughout the northern part of Colorado Springs. This soil is being gathered
through the combined efforts of the CMRF and Castle Concrete. Much of the reclamation done
during the last year utilized some of this soil and although it is still too early to determine the
compatibility of the soil with the site, initial assessments indicate a reasonably high compatibility.
Weed introduction from these soils will be watched closely as that has been a serious problem at
Queens Canyon Quarry. Chemical controls may be necessary. This has become a serious problem
with using the introduced soils, but the advantages of these soils appears to greatly outweighed the
disadvantages.
Storm Damages (added in 1999): The large and devastating storm that caused extensive
damage throughout the Arkansas River Basin did significant damage [o the Pikeview Quarry. In
fact, for a period the quarry was closed due to blockage of the access road above the office.
Employees were trapped in the quarry for a time until they could work through the mudslide.
Three areas were affected. There were a number of small slumps along the access road
leading into the quarry. There was also a slump of a reclaimed area on the south end of the quarry.
But the major damage was a huge mudslide and slope failure of a fill slope above the roadway
Castle Concrete 2000 Annual Report M-77-211 Pikeview Quarry Page 2 of 4
