J
Vegetation Cover
Total vegetation cover of the 1986 Reclamation Area was 47.80 percent. Based on
cover sampling, graminoids represented 44.20 percent mean cover (93.00% relative
cover), forbs accounted for 3.60 percent mean cover (6.67% relative cover), and a
' succulent accounted for 0.33 percent relative cover.
The dominant plant species was Calamovilfa longifolia (prairie sandreed) with 14.80
percent mean cover and 33.00 percent relative cover. There were two sub-dominant
grass species: Andropogon hallii (sand bluestem) with 10.80 percent mean cover and
' 21.67 percent relative cover, and Bromus marginatus (mountain brome) with 9.60
percent mean cover and 18.67 percent relative cover. Additional significant species
included; Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) with 2.60 percent mean cover and 6.00 percent
relative cover, Sporobolus cryptandrus (sand dropseed) at 2.40 percent mean cover
' (5.00% relative cover), and F.rigeron bellidiastrum (annual daisy) with 2.60 percent
mean cover (4.67% relative cover).
i
i
i
c organic mater
olog
al)
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other b
comprised 33.00 percent ground cover within the 1986 Reclamation Area. Bare soil
' comprised 19.20 percent of the ground cover encountered in the 1986 Reclamation
Area. No rock was encountered in the cover sampling of this area.
• Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production on the 1986 Reclamation Area was 383.9 g/m2 (3422.0
' lb/ac). Perennial grasses dominated herbaceous production, contributing 362.8 g/m2
(3233.9 lb/ac) or 94.5 percent of total herbaceous production. Annual grasses
' contributed 3.9 g/m2 (34.81b/ac), or 1.0 percent of herbaceous production in this area.
Perennial forbs were present in the production sampling in this area and contributed
13.7 g/m2 (122.1 lb/ac), accounting for 3.6 percent of the total mean herbaceous
' production. Annual forbs accounted for 3.5 g/m2 (31.2 lb/ac) and 0.8 percent of total
herbaceous production.
' Species Diversity
Within the 1986 Reclamation Area three lifeforms were represented; graminoids, forbs,
and succulents. The lifeforms included ten species of perennial grasses, one annual
grass, two perennial forbs, three annual forbs, and one evergreen succulent. Of the
' species encountered on the 1986 Reclamation Area, 13 were native and four were
introduced. Perennial species outnumbered annual species by thirteen to four.
Seasonality of 1986 Reclamation Area species was split between cool season and warm
' season species. Six graminoids were cool season species and five were warm season
species. All forb species were identified as cool season. The succulent was evergreen
• in habit.
1
' -9-
