Henderson Mine SPCC/MCP May 1999
means of a "quick couple" system housed inside the building for containment and the
outside has a small depression where spills or leaks would be contained in thc: unlikely
event of a hose breakage at the truck. Inside the building are spill control items such as
empty drums, floor dry, buckets, a broom, and a shovel.
The shops and service bays also have smaller quantities of oils, greases and solvents in
use. Generally these areas aze designed so that spilled petroleum products report to floor
drains that report, in tum, to an oil skimmer, and fmally the sewage treatm~:nt plant.
Therefore, it is unlikely that oil-contaminated waters from the shops and service bays
would escape the in-place treatment system of Henderson Mine.
6.4 Petroleum Products-Used Oil Storage Building and Tank
Used oil at the mine is stored in a 47,000 gallon tank, surrounded by a concrete retaining
wall which is capable of holding 48,300 gallons. Totes and drums containing used oil aze
stored inside the Used Oil Building, a concrete bermed facility, having a cortainment
voltune of some 4,000 gallons. From totes and drums, used oil is Vansferred to the
47,000 gallon used oil tank via pipeline. This pipeline is pressure tested at least semi-
annually and is the subject of an annual integrity test. Used oil is collected an<l shipped
off-site for recycling. Inside the Used Oil Building aze spill control items such as empty
totes and drums, floor dry, buckets, and a shovel.
6.5 Petroleum Products-Fuels (Gasoline and Diesel) on the Mine Surface
A fuel island is located west of the No. 1 Settling Pond (Figure 2). Eight thousand
(8,000) gallons of unleaded gasoline aze stored at this location in a single above ground
storage tank. A standard service station style pump and dispenser are used for fueling
vehicles directly from the tank. Also at the fuel island there is a 10,000 gallon No.l
diesel above ground storage tank. By means of ahand-actuated electric switch the fuel
nozzle lever is depressed to allow fuel to flow. Both the gasoline tank and the #1 diesel
storage tank are fully enclosed by a 35 foot x 70 foot x 3.5 foot concrete containment
structure with a capacity of 64,000 gallons. (Figure 2).
In the Surface Shop approximately 500 gallons of lubricants and 150 gallons of ~mtifreeze
aze stored. Spills of these materials would report to the building's concrete floor where
they could be handled with conventional spill clean-up gear such as sorbent booms, pads,
pillows, floor dry, buckets and shovels.
6.6 Petroleum Products-Oil and Fuel Surface Unloading Point for In-Mine Storage
Oil and fuel used underground in the mine aze transferred directly from tanker trucks to
underground storage. The above ground tanker loadout hose connection for in-mine
• storage of diesel fuel and hydraulic oil (Figure 6) is located next to No. 1 Shaft (Figure 2)
Seven thousand gallon tanker trucks pazk in a 7,500 gallon capacity concrete sump when
transferring fuel and oil to the underground storage facility.
14
