Henderson Mine SPCC/MCP May 1999
• 6. I Petroleum Products and Appropriate Spill Control (General)
Henderson Mine utilizes a variety of petroleum products for lubricants (oils and. greases)
on equipment, vehicle fuels (gasoline and diesel), rock oils for drilling, gener;ttor fuels
(diesel), and various other products typically found in a lazge mining operation. Used oils
are also stored in totes, cans, and tanks in a variety of locations throughout. In the
unlikely event that a spill of petroleum product occurs, the following procedun:s should
be utilized:
• Spills on land should be contained by pitting the ground or diking the ground azound
the spill. Absorbent pads and/or pumps can then be employed to clean up the material
• Spills on water should be contained by absorbent booms, straw bale dams, or other
readily available materials. Mechanical skimmers, separators, or absorbent materials
can then be used to extract the petroleum product.
6.2 Petroleum Products-Antifreeze
Antifreeze is used in the mine heating system at No. 2 Shaft. Approximately 13,000
gallons of a 50 percent ethylene glycol in water solution are contained in the system
• which consists of boilers, heat exchangers, and pipelines. Leaks or breaks in the system
would enter building drains and eventually flow to the water treatment system. Pipeline
breaks in the No. 2 shaft would allow the glycol/water solution to mix with mine water
and also be carried to the water treatment system. Shutoff valves throughout the system
allow leaky or broken sections to be isolated for spill control. Three above-ground 900
gallon tanks of ethylene glycol antifreeze are located on the east side of the compressor
building (Figure 2). The tanks are surrounded by a concrete retaining wall designed to
contain the contents of all three tanks, the contents of adjacent piping, plus an allowance
for stormwater and snowmelt. Total volume of containment is 24,000 gallons compared
to 16,000 gallons in the tanks and cooling system.
Waste ethylene glycol is collected and shipped off-site for recycling.
6.3 Petroleum Products-Oils, Greases, Solvents on the Mine Surface
Housed in the Bulk Oil Storage Building (Figure 2) inside concrete containment are four
1,500 gallon tanks containing miscellaneous lube and gear oils (Rykon 46, 50 wt geaz oil,
and 15-40 wt motor oil), as well as rock drilling oil. The concrete containment structure
has sufficient capacity to hold the contents of the largest tank plus 10%. The various oils
are transferred into 150 or 350 gallon totes for use at specific locations such as sl•,.ops, fuel
bays, etc. While on the surface, these totes are stored in a covered dock in containment
pans designed to contain small releases from the totes. Although individual drums aze
avoided, the occasional drum of non-bulk petroleum product is taken duectly to the areas
of usage. Bulk loads of oil delivered in tanker trucks can be effectively off-leaded by
I;
