Henderson Mine SPCC/MCP May 1999
Diesel fuel and hydraulic oil are transferred from the surface loadout to the main storage
tanks, three 7,000 gallon diesel fuel tanks and one 7,000 gallon hydraulic oil tank on the
8035 level. There is also one 8,000 gallon diesel fuel and one 1,000 gallon hydraulic oil
storage tank in the 728 drift (Figure 6). The oil is transferred through heavy pipes which
aze socket welded and have been pressure tested. A procedure sheet is posted at the
loadout facility to advise tanker personnel of the proper loadout, and spill prevention and
containment procedures.
The underground storage tanks aze equipped with automatic level sensors which prevent
overflows, and are monitored when diesel fuel and hydraulic oil transfers take place. The
main diesel fuel storage tanks are equipped with equalization valves so that all tanks fill
evenly. All of the underground tanks are surrounded by containment walls vuhich are
sized to hold the capacity of all of the tanks in that area.
The pumps at the 8035 level which transfer diesel fuel and hydraulic oil to the remote
storage tanks at 728 drift are surrounded by a concrete curb to contain any leaks. When
diesel fuel and hydraulic oil aze transferred to the remote tanks at 728 drift, mechanical-
electrical systems are in place to warn the operator of a leak or malfunction which could
allow a spill. The transfer lines are drained after every transfer and are pressure t~:sted and
inspected at least yeazly in accordance with a procedure sheet.
From the 728 drift tanks, the diesel fuel and hydraulic oil are pumped on demand to the
Fuel Bay on the 7700 level for use in vehicles.
In the unlikely occuaence of a break in a transfer pipeline, some liquid could enter the
mine water removal system. Any such liquid would be captured and removed at either
the underground settlers or surface ponds by means of absorbent pads and booms.
6.7 Petroleum Products-Oil and Fuel in Portable Storage Underground at the Nline
There are various locations throughout the underground mine where 55 gallon drums or
totes of diesel fuel, oil, solvent, antifreeze, or used oil may be placed prior to use or
disposal. There are also maintenance vehicles that carry fuel and oil from the stationary
tanks to lazge mining equipment during servicing. Because of their combustible nature,
these products are stored and handled carefully. This cazefiil handling minin.~izes [he
possibility of spills and water contamination. In the unlikely event of a shill from
transporting or vehicle servicing underground, some liquid could enter the mine water
removal system. Any such liquid would be captured and removed at either the
underground settlers or surface ponds by means of absorbent pads and booms.
6.8 Petroleum Products-Diesel Fuel at the Urad's Old Mill Building
A backup generator containing approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel is located in the
Old Mill Building at Urad Mine. This generator is filled using portable totes. A concrete
IS
