• 2.0 MorriTORINC M~rHODs
2.1 Surface Water

Monthly surface water samplings were conducted at each of the
seven designated stations PRS-1, PRS-2, PRS-3, West Portal, MDNE-1, MDGFrl,
CCS-1 and CC`S-2. Quarterly surface water samplings were conducted at each
of the four designated stations CCS-1, CCS-2, West Portal, MDNE-1 and
MDGFrl. Annual water quality sampling will be conducted during November for
each station.
During each monthly sampling, in-situ water quality measurements
of temperature, conductivity and pH were made using a Hydro lab Nbdel 4000
field sampling kit. An expanded list of water quality parameters was
collected during the quarterly sampling which were sent to ire
Laboratories, Inc., of Denver for laboratory analysis. water quality
parameters for annual sampling are filtered for dissolved parameters in the
• field with a Geotech 2.4 liter barrel filter.
Quality control of water analysis was performed by two methods.
Prior to any field sampling, the Hydro lab Sampling Kit was calibrated to
known standards produced in the laboratory. A record of each calibration
was kept as to the date, person performing the calibration, and adjustments
made. Oore~laboratories, Inc. maintains internal quality control of sample
handling andinstru<nentation calibration.
Water quality or flow measurements were conducted by a number of
methods. A straight, flat, stable reach of each stream station was selected
as a sampling location in 1984. Across-section was surveyed perpendicular
to the stream flow and permanently marked with stakes and flagging. Flvu
was measured with a Teledyne-Gurley hbdel 625 Pygny type current meter using
the USGS six-tenths-depth methods. For the 1985 program on the Purgatoire
River station, staff gages were established on bridges above, between and
below the two mines providing data to calculate a stage-discharge curve for
. future discharge measurements. At the mine discharge stations, discharge
