The following monitoring methods are proposed to provide a measure of project success or need
for corrective action. Vegetative measurements and related terminology are defined in standard
sampling references (Daubenmire, 1959; Greig-Smith, 1964 and; Kershaw and Looney, 1985).
7.1 Mitigation Quadrats
Following construction of mitigation areas, 2 representative mitigation quadrats will be selected
from each area. The purpose of these sites is tc monitor and document establishment of wetland
characteristics in the mitigation areas.
A visual estimate of percent vegetative cover provided by each species in each mitigation quadrat
will be performed. A fist of all species appearing to provide more than 5°l0 of total projected
vegetative cover will be compiled along with an estimate of cover value of each species.
7.2 Comparison Quadrats
At the time mitigation quadrats are selected, 2 comparison area quadrats environmentally similar
to mitigation area quadrats will be selected from an adjacent undisturbed wetland area. The
purpose of these sites is to provide a method of determining relative success, or need for
corrective action.
A visual estimate of the percent vegetative cover provided by each species in comparison quadrats
will be performed. A list of all species appearing to provide more than 5% total projected
vegetative cover will be compiled along with an estimate of cover value of each species.
7.3 Record Photographs
Permanent photo documentation points will be installed at each comparison quadrat, and at each
mitigation quadrat. Photo-point monitoring establishes a vegetative growth record using
photographs taken from set vantage points. Initial photographs will betaken at the time quadrats
are selected, and subsequent photographs will be taken annually for inclusion in the annual
monitoring report.
7-1
