Introduced perennial cool season grasses averaged 31.4 percent of total vegetation cover. <br />Intermediate wheatgrass accounted for more than half of this average. Smooth brome and <br />fescue (Festuca ovina var. duriuscula) were also important. Native perennial cool season <br />grasses averaged 4.4 percent of total vegetation cover. Basin wildrye accounted for nearly <br />all of this average. Introduced annual grasses averaged 4.2 percent of total vegetation <br />cover. Japanese brome accounted for most of this average but cheatgrass was also <br />important. <br />Total vegetation cover averaged 69.7 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and, rock <br />cover averaged 1.3, 23.8, 4.8, and 0.4 percent, respectively. Species density averaged <br />26.8 species per 100 sq, m. <br />Herbaceous Production (Table 11) <br />Alfalfa averaged 1,395.4 pounds of herbaceous production per acre. All other species <br />averaged 1,989.6 pounds of herbaceous production per acre. Total herbaceous production <br />averaged 3,385.0 pounds per acre. <br />Shrub Densi (Table 12) <br />Native shrubs, the only woody life form observed in this unit, averaged 250.9 individuals <br />per acre. Big sagebrush accounted for more than half of these but mountain snowberry was <br />also important. Chokecherry was a minor contributor. <br />Mountain Brush Reference (Photographs 16, 18, and 19) <br />Cover (Table 13) <br />Native shrub was the dominant life form in this unit with 69.2 percent of total vegetation <br />cover. Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii) accounted for nearly half of this average. <br />Mountain snowberry and Saskatoon serviceberry were also important. Big sagebrush and <br />chokecherry were minor contributors. Native perennial fortis averaged 12.1 percent of <br />total vegetation cover. Horsemint (Monarda fistulosa ssp. menthifolia) accounted for more <br />than one-third of this average. Western yarrow, nettle-leaf giant hyssop (Aaastache <br />urticitolia), showy fleabane (Eriaeron speciosus), and northern bedstraw (Galium <br />seotentrionale) were also important.
