lanuginosum), a native fern, averaged 4.6 percent of total vegetation cover. Introduced <br />annual and biennial (orbs, primarily hound's tongue, averaged 2.4 percent of total <br />vegetation cover. Native perennial cool season grasses averaged 11.1 percent of total <br />vegetation cover. Agassiz bluegrass accounted for nearly halt of this but elk sedge (Carex <br />geveri) was also important. <br />Total vegetation cover averaged 82.6 percent. Standing dead, litter, and bare soil cover <br />averaged 0.2, 13.8, and 3.4 percent, respectively. Species density averaged 39.2 species <br />per 100 sq. m. <br />Herbaceous Production (Table 14) <br />Total herbaceous production for all species other than alfalfa averaged 981.4 pounds per <br />acre. No alfalfa was observed in this native reference area. <br />Sagebrush Reference Area (Photographs 17, 20, and 21) <br />i Cover (Table 15) <br />II <br />Native perennial cool season grass was the dominant life form in this unit with 42.2 <br />percent of total vegetation cover. Sheep fescue (Festuca brachvohvlla s:>p. coloradensis) <br />accounted for more than half of this. Agassiz bluegrass, Montana wheatgrass (Elvmus <br />lanceolatus fm. a s), and slender wheatgrass were also important. <br />~~ Native shrubs averaged 33.2 percent of total vegetation cover. Big sagebrush accounted for <br />more than half of this average. Mountain snowberry was also important. Saskatoon <br />II serviceberry and alkali sagebrush (Seriphidium arbusculum ssp. lonai o m) were minor <br />contributors. Native perennial fortis averaged 22.8 percent of total vegetation cover. <br />~ Weedy milkvetch (Astragalus miser var. oblongifolius), one-flower woodsunflower <br />~~ (Helianthella uniflora), and Pacific aster (Virgulaster ascenders) were this life form's <br />major cover contributors. Western yarrow, arrowleaf balsamroot (f3~samorhiza <br />sa i a), fringed thistle (Cirsium centaureae), sulphur flower (Frio Drum <br />i umbellatum), and American vetch were also important. <br />I <br />14 <br />I <br /> <br />• <br />• <br />
