Introd
ction
~.
The water quality assessment ofthe Williams Fork River near the RAG Empire Corporation Eagle
Mine (hereinafter Eagle Mine) dischazges was developed for the Colorado Deparhnent of Public
Health and Environment (CDPHE) Water Quality Control Division (WQCD).'The WQA::was
prepazed to facilitate issuance ofthe Colorado Dischazge Permit System (CDPS) permit for the Eagle
Mine, CDPS Permit No. CO-0034142, and is intended to determine the assimilative capacities
available to the Eagle Mine dischazges for pollutants found to be of concern. -
Figure A-1 on the following page contains a map of the study azea evaluated as part of this WQA.
The RAG Empire Corporation discharges water from the Eagle Mine through 18 outfalls to the
- Williams Fork River and the Yampa River. Based on WQCD procedwes,'dischazges composed
entirely of swface runoffaze not evaluated in this assessment. This is because automatic dischazges
of surface runoff only occw during precipitation events, which aze not times of low flow. Therefore,
this WQA addresses the non-storm water related dischazges of mine water, spoils springs, domestic
wzstervater and industrial washdown v~~ater to the Williams Fork River from the following: -
• Outfa11003 consisting of mine water
• Outfa11022 consisting of spoils spring water and seepage from the mine dewatering system. ~~
• Outfall 023 consisting of domestic wastewater and industrial washdown water
• Outfa11024 consisting of mine water.
Appendix A Page 1 of 13
