Also, additional construction waste fill has been hauled into the
northwest corner of the operation in order to effect the shifting of the
pit access road to the south. This allows a further backfilling of the
north side of the pit.
RULE 2.41 2 LOCATIONS AND NUMBER OF ACRES RECLAIMED FOR THAT YEAR.
The only land reclaimed in this year was the backfilling which
occurred to move the pit road to the south. No planting was attempted
on the slopes of the operation itself, although if it had been done it
might have been successful this year because the winter snowfall in this
area was more than 2 times normal. However, planting was done on about
2-3 acres on the east side of Academy Boulevard. This was done on the
regraded area which covers the box culvert through which the ditch exits
the pipe under Academy Boulevard.
RULE 2.41 3 THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES IN THE VARIOUS STAGES OF
RECLAMATION (BACKFILLED, GRADED, TOPSOIL REPLACED, REVEGETATED).
The total area under reclamation at this operation amounts to about
3 acres. This includes the area backfilled for the road movement, the
revegetation of the slope above the ditch, and some other minor
reclamation activities.
RULE 2.41(4): THE SPECIES OF VEGETATION PLANTED, THE LOCATIONS AND
APPROXIMATE DATES OF PLANTING.
No vegetation was planted this year.
RULE 2.41 5 THE TYPE AND APPROXIMATE QUANTITY OF FERTILIZERS, ORGANIC
MATERIAL, OR SOIL CONDITIONERS USED AND LOCATION OF USE.
Because no seeding was done, no fertilizers or soil amendments were
added this year.
RULE 2.41 6 AN APPRAISAL OF THE SUCCESS OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS, AND
IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OF ANY EFFORTS, A SHORT NARRATIVE ON THE
SUSPECTED OR DETERMINED CAUSE OF SUCH FAILURE.
As discussed in last year's report, the seeding of the south facing
slope on the north side of the pit was fraught with major problems. The
dry winter of 1985-1986 and early hot weather so severely desiccated the
soil the growth and establishment of grasses was virtually impossible.
Even if a deep mulch layer had been used and was able to be kept in
place, it is doubtful the seeding would have been successful because
there simply was so little moisture. As a result, it is now considered
that the 1986 seeding of the large slope has become a total failure due
to severely adverse environmental conditions.
Page 2 of 3 Permit 77-213 Sand Pit 1987 Annual Report
