•
In this report, processing is meant to include activities which are
directly involved in washing, crushing, stockpiling and marketing. It
does not include settling ponds or temporary stockpiles for local
excavations.
Dry Settling Ponds - These ponds are generally no longer in use
except for placement of sediment transportation pipes from the
processing plant to the active sediment ponds. As these areas dry they
are buried and placed in a condition of temporary reclamation.
Permanent reclamation will not occur until Castle Concrete's Sand Pit
operation to the north of this operation is completed.
Settling Pond - This includes the area where sediment derived from
the processing plant is disposed. This process backfills the area of
the pond and allows return of the water back to the groundwater.
Mixed Uses - This includes an area where there is no distinctive
definition of purpose. It is generally the interface area between
processing and other uses. Included in this area, at any one time,
could be uses ranging from minor extraction work, storage of temporary
stockpiles, roadways, equipment storage, settling ponds, and most
anything else that might be found in an operation of this type.
Grading - The area indicated as grading is occupied by an old
settling pond which has been covered with soil and other materials which
would provide a suitable plant growth medium. It could be considered
land under reclamation except that until the merger between Castle
Concrete's Sand Pit and this operation occurs, there is no way to
establish a final location or elevation to this material. Its surface
may in fact need to be altered when that merger is completed.
EAST OF ACADEMY BOULEV
Area A - Area A was primarily disturbed for purposes of
establishing the new route for the Fountain Mutual Ditch. This ditch
relocation was accomplished during the last year. Sand removed from the
ditch excavation, which was up to 30 feet deep in places, was utilized
as sand product mostly by Castle Concrete Company. Castle Concrete
Company relocated the ditch as part of an extensive plan to merge the
processing area of this operation (west of Academy Boulevard) with their
Sand Pit operation.
Area B - The area of excavation which was discussed in last year's
report continued to expand somewhat as more material was extracted.
Mostly, however, it was the depth rather than the surface area which
increased.
Area C - This small excavation was initiated in the last year in
an attempt to locate a special type of sand material. Not a great deal
of work occurred in this area, but ground was broken, soil stockpiled,
and some sand removed.
FILE 73-7 ANNUAL REPORT - 1986/1987 PAGE 2 OF 6
