Dr. Richard WarArchairman •
March 2 , 1979
• Page Two
40 pounds per acre because most of the areas seeded during
this season were the most difficult sites. Maintenance and
establishment fertilizer rates were applied in accordance
with the plan.
1978 was the driest of the past five growing seasons at
the mine. The mill site had below average precipitation
also. Consequently, it was a poor year for germination and
establishment. Previously established vegetation did not
appear to decline.
There are no changes in the anticipated number or
locations of acres to be affected next year as estimated in
the accepted reclamation timetable.
Also as stipulated in the plan, 421 , 000 cubic yards of
soil were stripped from within the tailing basin and stock-
piled in Ute Park during 1978 . We have already seeded the
stockpile and planted some shrubs - and - since this stock-
pile will remain in place for 30 years or more, we are going
to plant some of it to trees also. Distribution of topsoil
on the mine site fill slopes was not completed as antici-
pated in 1978. This job will be completed in 1979.
Other 1978 activities included:
1. We have postponed additional timber clearing (and
marketing) within the tailing basin until 1980 because
there is sufficient space to accommodate tailing
deposition until that time.
2. The fencing along the railroad tracks near the portal
was extended all the way across the valley. There is a
Forest Service campground within walking distance of
the railroad near the portal. The fence was extended
to exclude curious people. The Division of Wildlife
was consulted during the design phase.
li 3. We salvaged a pump house from Urad as a part of that
reclamation project and moved it to the Henderson mine
site.
4. We routed our treated water around the second settling
pond at the mine site because the refuse dump was en-
croaching on the pond. The elimination of this pond
does not interfere with the wastewater management of
the effluent.
