DISCUSSION
Successfulness of Reveaetation. The percent total plant cover for the Grassland
Reference Area obtained from 1987 sampling, was calculated to equal 41.0
percent, the forage production was calculated to equal 74.08 grams per square
meter or 660.1 pounds of air dry forage per acre and the woody plant density
sampling yielded an average density of 179.7 woody plants or 4.20 shrubs per
50 square meters. In order to evaluate the differences between the two
reclaimed sites sampled in 1991, the mean total plant cover values for these two
sites were compared using the t-test statistical comparison with corresponding
values obtained from the 1987 sampling of the Grassland Reference Area.
Total plant cover for the 1983 and 1987 reclaimed sites was not found to
be significantly different from the Grassland Reference Area plant cover values
obtained in 1987. These comparisons suggests that if either the 1983 or 1987
reclaimed sites were at least ten years old and final bond release were sought,
these two sites would satisfy the revegetation success criteria with respect to
total plant cover.
Total plant production between the 1983 and 1987 reclaimed sites was not
found to be significantly different from the Grassland Reference Area plant
production values obtained in 1987.
